On a rainy Friday night in New York City Mags and I went to see 50 Shades The Musical. Yes, the new musical parody about Fifty Shades and it was absolutely hilarious!
Before the show, the bar at the Gramercy Theatre was open and offering specialty drinks. Mags and I had Inner Goddess Jello Shots. Mags was not impressed, I thought it was ok. Neither of us felt any effects from it, but we had some drinks with dinner before the show so maybe we were already a bit tipsy.
The show starts with a dark scene and some sounds you might expect to hear in the Red Room of Pain. When the lights turn on, it’s 3 women getting ready for their book club. Of course the book club is about Fifty Shades of Grey.
Being a parody, all the characters personalities are exaggerated. Jose was sexy strutting around in his orange shirt. Katherine Kavanaugh was a drunk who had lots of sex with Elliot, more then in the book at least… Ana was extra innocent and I’ll talk about Christian in a minute.
The acting was great, the signing was great. The songs weren’t in the league of Les Mis or Phantom, but they were perfect for this show. There were some sexy extras in the show too, because I know you all like your eye candy.
There was no nudity, but plenty of sexual innuendoes and a bit of simulated sex too. Everyone was laughing at how they “adjusted” the scenes from the books.
As for Christian Grey. He wasn’t the sexy, sculptured man from the books. His singing wasn’t the best in the show. But damn, any man who will strut out on stage in a red wrestling outfit and sing and dance is sexy in a whole different way.
As for the crowd, it was mostly woman in the 30-40 year old range, though I certainly saw older and younger woman. While most of the crowd was groups of woman having a ladies night, there were some men there who accompanied their wives/girlfriends.
If anyone is considering seeing this show – stop reading this post and go buy tickets!!!!! Oh, and runtime is about an hour and a half and there is an intermission.
