Last night I had the opportunity to interview Al Samuels – Director, Producer, Co-Writer and Co-Lyracist of 50 Shades! The Musical, The Original Parody. Mags and I saw the show last year in New York City and really loved the show. I think I loved Al as much as I loved the show (but not in a creepy way).
Al Samuels is a founding member of Baby Wants Candy, the company that created the musical. The show was originally created for the Edinburgh Fringe Film Festival, and was brought to New York City. The show currently has a New York City run and a traveling show, which will be in Los Angeles starting on February 25th through the end of March. We are currently hosting a giveaway for the March 4th show in Los Angeles
The show opens with a ladies book club deciding to read Fifty Shades of Grey, the show does a musical interpretation of the series. The show has songs like: “I Don’t Make Love,” “There’s A Hole Inside of Me,” and an exclusive song in iTunes “Butthole In Control.” The New York City, and some of the local shows, also offer Fifty Shades of Grey inspired drinks to get you in the mood.
While the show pays comical homage to the series, the show is designed to allow non-readers to experience and enjoy the show. The audience when I attended was primarily woman, with a few men sprinkled in too. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a few more men these days since there is a growing male fandom of the series. While there is no nudity in the show, it is a bit raunchy at times and is not recommended for those under 18 years old.
On this show we also discussed some of the recent news in the Fifty Shades world. You can listen to this show in the archives of iTunes.
The Los Angeles production is at the Kirk Douglas Theater, prices starting at $30
