Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

The Daily Mail is reporting that a group of woman in North Wales have produced a play based on Fifty  Shades of Grey and it’s selling out.

The Portadown Times has an article about the Trouton paintings that hang in Christian’s office.  You know, the ones that raise the ordinary to extraordinary!

Wacky Laki has reviewed some Grey nail polish from Pure Ice.  Some of them look really nice even though I don’t necessarily think of grey for a nail polish!

Madonna and Child Paintings

MadonnaandChildWhen Ana first enters Christian’s foyer she comments on the huge bunch of white flowers and that there are paintings on the wall, everywhere.

In Fifty Shades Darker we find out that they are “all figurative painting, all religious-the Madonna and child, all sixteen of them.” We also find out that Christian isn’t religious and the paintings in great room are abstracts.  These paintings are not an accident.

Later in Fifty Shades Darker Christian and Ana have sex “under the patient, maternal eyes of the Madonna paintings.” Incase you’ve forgotten, this is after the elevator ride after visiting the Mile High Club.

The last time the Madonna’s are mentioned is in Fifty Shades Freed.  After Ana goes out with Kate while Christian is in NY and Jack gets caught in the Apt.  The following day when she arrives home, nervous about how Christian will react, she comments about the foyer, “The table is once more upright and in a new vase is in place with a gorgeous array of pale pink and white peonies. I quickly check the paintings as we wander through-the Madonnas all look to be intact.” Christian then takes Ana into the Red Room of Pain.

For those unaware of the symbolism of Madonna and child – they represent Mary (the virgin) and her son, Jesus.

The number 16 is not the most significant number in Christianity, but it certainly shows up in a lot of places. Several websites say the number 16 means love – Love never fails.  The number also comes up in other places, such as the number of apostles, and the number of years it took to write the 4 gospels, and the age when Mary had Jesus.

Mags, Jill and I have discussed this a bit and here are some of the theories we came up with:

They represent Christian’s love for his mother, and her love for him, even though he doesn’t recognize it.

His desire for a virginal woman (Ana) as opposed to his prostitute mother.

He’s quietly mocking his mother, his own inside joke as people enter his apartment.
On Twitter @teacheduk8 suggested it might have to do with the number of submissives he has had.

I’m not a very religious person and I’m not looking to start and in-depth conversation about religion, but I’m not quite sure I can wrap my brain around the possibilities of this.

Where is Dr. Flynn when you need him? So, what theory do you have on this?

Shades of Grey tourism in Seattle, Portland

Seattle Times has published an article about the increase of people going to the Heathman Hotel to look around, spend time at the bar and even booking hotel rooms.  While there are no public tours of the hotel as of yet, a general manager at the hotel welcomes tourists who have been dropping in to look around, ride the elevator, snap photos and book rooms.

Any of you big spenders looking to recreate Steele’s birthday party can opt for the Heathman’s $2,750 “Charlie Tango No Limits” package, including appetizers, wine, dinner and a helicopter ride over Portland for six; roses and limo transfers (rooms are extra).

I for one might have to be out in Washington with in the next few weeks for business and might find myself headed over to the Heathman to take in all that it has to offer!  I’ll let you know how that turns out…

Anyone else out there been thinking of doing some “50 shades travel”?

The Guradian has an intersting article on the significance of Tess in Fifty Shades of Grey. I do plan on reading Tess, and blogging about it, at some point after the Olympics.

Quibblo has a 25 question quiz on Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s not easy!

Fifty Shades of Grey Movie News

If you’re not following Brett Easton Ellis on Twitter, you should.  He’s started asking a lot of questions about what fans would like and not like to see in the movie.  Looks like he’s prepping for a proposal to write the screenplay.  While I was initially a little freaked out by this, I have read the book American Psycho and it makes the movie look like a children’s story, but the more I think about it the more the idea is growing on me.

Just a caution: Dana Brunetti did Tweet that the rumors are just rumors and they’re looking for a writer and director first.

Now on to the latest casting rumors:

There is talk of Emma Watson taking on the role of Ana.  I love Emma, think she’s a great actress, but this is one of those choices that I’m struggling with.  I think she could do it, but it just feels weird to me.
Mark Wright has expressed interest in the role of Christian.  Nope, even after reading who he is I still don’t know who he is.  Ok, he’s a British Reality TV star.  But bottom line he doesn’t have quite the right look to me.Astrochick has a fun article, I guess about what the stars are saying, about who will be cast in the movie. They are saying Ryan Gosling and Katie Cassidy.

Celebuzz reports William Levy is intersted in the role of Christian.

How about Sasha Grey from Entourage?

Gather has a story about Emilia Clark (and anyone else you can think of) playing Ana.

The Examiner has a nice mock up of an Entertainment Weekly magazine with Matt Bomer as Christian Grey.  It looks pretty!

I’ve been contacted by Sarah Blinco who writes for a number of magazines, primarily in Australia.  She’s looking for fans from Australia and the UK who have had their lives positively changed by Fifty Shades of Grey.  This could be relationships, overall confidence, whatever it might have done to improve your life.  You can either send her a tweet @Sarahblinco or send us an email and we’ll get in touch with her for you.

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

The Stir has a funny article featuring some of the best bad reviews of Fifty Shades of Grey, many are quite amusing.

The Huffington Post has an article about some other erotic novels through time.

In Westlake Ohio a radio station held a book burning for Fifty Shades of Grey. I could go on a rant about book burnings, but I’ll spare you. The best response to this that I have seen was that they just elevated the book by adding it to the list of books burned.

A German version of the books was published on July 9 with 500,000 copies sold out.  It is called Geheimes Verlangen, translated as Secret Desires.  Is there anyone from Germany reading who can comment on how it’s being received?

Book Publishers Hunt Online for the New EL James…

According to a new online article the 50 shades trilogy is changing the book publishing game (or so it seems).  Publishers are starting to move in on the profits generated by the thriving online platforms that serve unpublished writers.  What do you think? Does the success of this trilogy make it easier for any Tom, Dick or Harriette to become a published author?  Are any of you in the process of writing an ebook and trying to get it published?…
