Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

The Examiner reports that E L James was honored at “Women of the Year” event in London on Monday.  Erika did Tweet about the event live, including posting some pictures she had taken of some of the woman, particularly of TeamGB.  Congratulations to Erika and all the woman honored.

A law firm, McEntegart Legal Limited, in Liverpool has created a contract for partners.  For 1.99 pounds you can purchase and personalize your contract.  You can add “bonuses” for behavior, and I wonder if you are able to add punishment too.  It’s designed to be a fun contract for couples.  Perhaps it can open dialog for couples too.

John Grisham thinks that President Obama should read Fifty Shades of Grey.  Apparently he should have some fun too.  I don’t mind if he reads, but he might not want to tell the press.

Meet Dave from Dave Reads Fifty Shades of Grey

We started a new series of doing interviews with some other Fifty Shades of Grey fan sites, our first interview was with the Christian Grey Facebook fan page. For October we decided to go with a male perspective on Fifty Shades of Grey.  What I love about Dave’s answers is that you will know automatically if you like his style just from this interview.  I think some of you will love him and some of you will hate him, but to each his own, here is Dave:

What is your name? Dave King

How did you come to read Fifty Shades of Grey? I was aware of 50 Shades after my wife read it and was chatting to a friend about it in the pub. When I tried to engage them in conversation about 50 Shades, all I got was a series of stupid noises, comprising of giggles, sharp inhalations and too many ‘oohh’s’ to count. I managed to find out that there was a man (who turned out to be Christian) and a woman (Ana, obviously) who have a relationship. In order to be able to speak to my wife and female friends again, I started reading…

Did you read an actual book or an ebook? I’ve got it on my Kindle. As a man, I can’t be seen to be reading an actual copy of 50 Shades otherwise I will be shunned by society, mocked by babies and spat on by pensioners. An ebook is a much safer option for a man.

Which is your favorite book in the series? So far, I’m only on Chapter 24 of 50 Shades of Grey. By default it is my favourite book of the series and I love it more than life itself. However, that means it’s also my least favourite book in the series, so I loathe every single page.

What is your favorite scene in the series? There are plenty of bits that I’ve enjoyed, including where Christian appears out of nowhere, like a ninja, to save Ana from José’s aggressive cuddling outside the bar. I also liked the period sex because it gave me lots to write about! Having said that, I really love any scene with José or Taylor. I think they’re my favourite characters in the whole book. I love how Taylor is basically treated like a dog, being made to wait in the car (hopefully with the window open) or fetch things for Christian. He must really hate his life. I’ve got a real soft spot for José. He’s like a really well-meaning sexual predator who you can’t really get mad at. Imagine if a teddy bear tried to touch you on the tit, you couldn’t help but give it a ‘you shouldn’t be doing that’ look before giving it a big cuddle. That’s how I see José.

How many times have you read the series? 0. That probably makes me sound like the worst 50 Shades fan in the world, but in my defence, I do read each chapter 3 times and I have been writing around 3000 words per chapter, so I’ve probably spent more time with the book than most people. That might be the most depressing sentence I’ve ever written.

Outside of Fifty Shades of Grey, what is your favorite book or series? Well, after I finish reading 50 Shades, I am going to rediscover my masculinity and will be reading Arnold Schwarzenegger’s autobiography which promises to be the most manly book ever written. While I read it, I may well grow a beard and punch a Tiger in the face. By comparison, while I’ve been reading 50 Shades, I’ve contemplated buying display cushions and I think I’ve started to develop a vagina. I also love Roald Dahl books because I am still a child at heart. I’d also highly recommend ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness which is easily one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking books I’ve ever read. If you can read it without crying, you are dead inside.

Are you married, dating, or single? I’m very happily married to my wife of 2-and-a-bit years. As far as I’m aware, she still loves me, even though I don’t have a bajillion dollars, I’ve never taken her gliding and I don’t own any trousers that hang off my hips. Quite why she’s still putting up with me is a mystery.

Who would you like to see play Christian and Anastasia in the movie? I have a massive man crush on Tom Hardy, so he’d definitely get my vote. I seem to be the only person who thinks that he’d make a good Christian, but he looks astonishing with his top off. Just watch Warrior if you’re in any doubt. He’s also got that whole enigmatic, brooding thing that Christian has. I think he’d make a MUCH better Christian that Ian Somerhalder or Matt Bomer, and if you disagree, I WILL fight you (and probably lose.) For Ana, I think Felicity Jones would be ace. If you’ve not really seen her in anything, have a watch of Like Crazy. She’s still relatively unknown, but she’s fantastic and has a certain naive, innocent charm needed to play Ana.

If you were to meet E L James today, what 2 questions would you ask her? 1. Can you please retweet every single one of my Tweets? 2. I’m looking to start writing a book in the next few months. As someone who has led a busy life and still managed to write a book, how do you stay motivated to write and what tips can you give me for efficient, effective writing?

When did you start your website/fanpage? I started it back in July without much of an idea about what to do or how to write a blog. We’re now nearly 4 months on and nothing has really changed.

What is the goal or mission of your fanpage/website? When I first started, I genuinely thought that guys would read the blog so that they could pass my thoughts off as their own, making them seem like excellent boyfriends and husbands. I thought that I’d be providing a public service. As it turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong! The vast majority of my readers are women who have read and enjoyed the series. I like to think that although I do make fun of the book, people can see that I’m not being malicious or mean, I’m just providing a different opinion and perspective on a book which has been written about and dissected by millions of women…but very few men have taken the time to actually read the books for themselves.

The Sweet 16 of Anastasia Steele Actresses

For those of you who are basketball fans, you know all about March Madness and the Sweet 16.  It’s the top 16 teams in college basketball playing to see who is #1.  You’ve probably seen the brackets for it with the 8 teams on each side, winners of each game moving on to play other winners.  Here’s a link to the brackets from last year if you need a visual.  For the Sweet 16 of Ana we want to find what actress the fans want to play Ana in the Fifty Shades movie.

In no particular order, here are the brackets for the Sweet 16 of Anastasia Steele:

Here is how this will work, we will post a debate for each of the pairs, Alexis Bledel vs Emma Watson, Amanda Seyfried vs Lucy Hale, etc.  The winner of each debate will go on to be debated by the winner of the neighboring debate.  Winner of Alexis Bledel vs Emma Watson will go against the winner of Amanda Seyfried vs Lucy Hale.  We will post 1 debate a day and each debate will last for 5 days in the first round.  We will likely increase that as we get further into the tournament.

Let us know if you have any questions about this process in the comments section.  Thank you and good luck to the actresses.

The Amazing Jason Taylor

We know from the books that Ana is quite fond of Taylor and that Christian must be too if he’s paying for Taylor’s daughters school tuition in an effort to keep him around.  Ana thinks, and I agree, that Taylor must like Christian too.  Taylor does tell Ana that he’s a good man early in Fifty Shades of Grey.

And what isn’t their to like about Taylor, he is a bit of a super hero.  Ana comments to Christian that Taylor takes good care of him.  But he also takes good care of Ana too, he’s a bit like The Hulk when Jack tries to get in Ana’s pants – you wont like him when he’s angry!  And I could only imagine the scene at the end of Freed (I wont spoil this for readers who didn’t get that far), but he might have actually turned green and ripped out of his clothing.

Taylor has a bit of Superman in him too.  He always seems to be there when you need him.  For example: when Christian and Ana go to Aspen he takes them to the airport, even escorts them onto the plane.  When they arrive in Aspen he is there waiting with the rental van.  Feats no mere mortal could do, yet the amazing Jason Taylor can do it.  And we love him for it.
