Meet: Fifty Shades of Grey and More

What is your name?

Monique Lain

How did you come to read Fifty Shades of Grey?

In a very rare (for me) moment of “booklessness” I caught the tail end of an intriguing interview about it. Not knowing exactly what I was getting myself into I decided to check it out and the rest – as they say – is history.

Did you read an actual book or an ebook?

FSOG happened to be the first ebook I bought and read on my iPad and since then, I’ve never looked back. You gotta’ love buying a book with a single click then reading it within seconds – what bliss!

Which is your favorite book in the series?

It’s almost impossible for me to choose but if I absolutely had to it would be the last one, Freed.

What is your favorite scene in the series?

Scene, as in singular? Are you kidding? Uhm, well apart from every time Christian throws Ana over his shoulder and every time he’s insanely, unreasonably jealous and possessive the best I can do is narrow it down to two. The scene where he gives her hickeys on their honeymoon in retaliation for going topless and the short dress scene in Aspen. Oh boy, that was delicious!

How many times have you read the series?

Just once! (Blush)… Okay, maybe twice?…. Oh, all right! I lost count at eight, cover to cover, back to back….. It’s bad I know! What can I say? I wanted… more…

Outside of Fifty Shades of Grey, what is your favorite book or series?

I adore Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series and recently discovered, thanks to one of my readers, the Jodi Ellen Malpas’ This Man series – intense but highly addictive.

Are you married, dating, or single?

I’m married to the best guy! He proof reads my work but lately I’ve been hearing mumblings about how much better he thinks it would be if I threw in a couple of aliens! Mmmhhh, not sure my readers would go for that though; I must admit that hubby reading Fifty Shades Meander does come with some inherent benefits… (Wink, wink)

Who would you like to see play Christian and Anastasia in the movie?

For Christian I’m a big Jesse Pavelka fan but I’ll settle for Ian Somerhalder, if only for those eyes…

For Ana I’m a little more flexible but I like Kristen Kreuk and Alexis Bledel for the part.

If you were to meet E L James today, what 2 questions would you ask her?

How far are you with the next book??

When is it being released??

When did you start your website/fanpage?

I started on Fanfiction in May 2012 but moved to my own site in October of the same year.

What is the goal or mission of your fanpage/website?

Apart from keeping the FSOG story alive I wanted to communicate with my readers. We share books and the various shades of obsessions, we chat and we have a laugh. It’s so much more personal than Fanfiction messaging. I feel like they’ve become friends. If publication happens to come along, well then, that would be just dandy!

What is E L James up to in LA?

With E L James in Los Angeles since this weekend there has been a lot of buzz about what she’s been doing. Most of it is speculation regarding what she’s been tweeting.  Here is a review:

Erika came in to LA on Friday and didn’t waste any time seeing Kelly Marcel (screenwriter) and perhaps picking up some interesting reading material.  She’s also been out with the producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca, even got to ride is Dana’s Tesla!

So, the band is back together, what fabulous news.  But the question is what are they discussing.  The only thing tweeted about her seeing Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca has been regarding social events.  While I’m sure Fifty probably came up, I doubt they were discussing the script, actors or directors in public.  Dana Brunetti also flew out of LA over the weekend and hasn’t said he’s back.  But he did tweet about meeting Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.  Hmm, maybe he’s working on the soundtrack.  JOKING!

Back to EL James, on Tuesday she spent he day with Kelly Marcel and burned the evidence.

I guess the script isn’t done yet, but it’s getting there… While the timing of this trip may have been about the Oscars, this is definitely a working trip too.

As for the Oscars, apparently Erika was chatty at the Vanity Faire party.  As Mags mentioned on Tuesday, she said her next book will be less raunchy and she’ll be using a pseudonym.  WHAT? That’s just crazy!  But she also said that she has a few actors in mind (old news) and that she thinks we’ll be surprised by her choices.

Hmmm, does that mean we should give up on Matt Bomer, Ian Somerhalder or whoever the “favorite” is each day?  I’m not going that far, but I’m sticking with my idea of not getting too attached to anyone.  But several months ago I did predict that Ryan Gosling would get the role and his name has not come up as a “favorite” in a while…  As for Ana, I think it will be a relatively unknown.  Now that would be a surprise name to everyone.

Now that I’ve laid my predictions regarding Christian and Ana onto the internet, we still need the director to be named before we find out who will play Christian and Ana.  We know that Universal/Team50 has been talking with some directors, so it’s likely we’re not looking at a long list anymore, but how short is the list?  At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced the director as E L James gets on a plane back home.  But I think another month or two is more realistic.

Finally Erika ended her day with some Twilight:

EL James Next Book to be Written Under a Pseudonym!

la–et–fifty–shadesAccording to Daily Mail UK online EL James has said that while she has a number of ideas for her next book, it will not be as intense as the Fifty Shades Series and most likely will be written under another name.

According to the article, E.L. – real name Erika Leonard – told MailOnline of her struggle with her sudden fame, saying: “My sons are proud of me, although they’re still embarrassed – but I’m embarrassed too!”

What do you think EL will wind up writing about for her next book?  What will her pseudonym be?

When will this movie come out already!

This week The Hollywood Reporter published an interview with Universal Chairman Adam Fogelson.  The interview covers a lot of different material, so I’ll just give you the Fifty Shades bit:

THR: Give us an update on the Fifty Shades movie. Some think you aren’t moving quickly enough to capitalize on the buzz.

Fogelson: I certainly understand why some people might take that point of view. But I don’t believe that [author EL James] had any interest in going to a studio where rushing it into production was the vision. I don’t believe that the second or third film would have benefited from that strategy. And I think that there are totally legitimate questions about what this book is as a movie. I will tell you that it is an absolute priority for us. It’s conceivable that we could be ready to release it as early as next summer.

Me: WHAT, summer to 2014?  Ok, there had been some rumblings recently that it was going to be a 2014 release. With no Director or cast at this point, a 2013 release is pretty much impossible anyway.  Especially if you want a quality film and I think most of us don’t want them to rush and make a crap film, Christian and Ana deserve better then that.

THR: Is it true you asked Angelina Jolie to direct?

Fogelson: No. We’re involved in a different project [the World War II drama Unbroken] with her. But we have had really, really interesting, great conversations with talented, serious filmmakers.

Unbroken

Me: I’m not a big Angelina Jolie (the actress) fan, but I know a lot of people would like to see her direct this film.  But she’s directing Unbroken, holy cow! How did I not know this?    If you haven’t read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, who also wrote Seabiscuit, it’s a great story that is about as far from Fifty Shades of Grey as you can get.

Without giving much away about the book, Olympic runner joins Air Force in WWII, plane gets shot down, drifts in the Pacific Ocean until he ends up in Japan and is a POW to a man who make Mrs. Robinson seem nurturing. It also happens to be a true story.  If you ever thought your life sucked, read this book, you’ll never think it again.

I thought this was an interesting development because Angelina has been linked to Fifty Shades of Grey as a possible director.  Although it’s just speculation, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear her name announced as the director of Fifty Shades of Grey.  With the hit that Unbroken could be the potential for this big.  Unbroken, as a New York Times Best Selling book, whose authors last movie adaptation was nominated for Oscars and the type of story that could bring more Oscars…

The other thing is Fogelson’s comment is that they have been talking to directors.  I’ll infer two things from this.  Even if the 1st draft of the script isn’t done, there must have been a lot of progress.  Second, the director list is getting trimmed, if not short.  But, Angelina may not be on it.  Fogelson says they didn’t discuss Fifty Shades (but have discussed it with others) and she’s now tied up with another big film so she may not be available to make Fifty Shade of Grey too.

Yes, that is totally contradictory to what I just said before, just think of me typing this as I brainstorm the possibilities.

Tess of the D’Urbervilles Chapter V

In Chapter IV we left off with Tess and Abraham taking the bee hives to Casterbridge.  After falling asleep Tess had an accident with another carriage, causing the death of the family horse, Prince.  Tess was feeling quite guilty and I was concerned about what she would do to make it up to her family.

As I guessed, Tess’ guilt did leave her looking for ways to make this up to her family and with the urging of her father not to, she decided to go to the d’Urberville house to claim kin.

In case I haven’t said it yet, I’m really starting to like Tess.  She’s bright and knows her parents aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer, but is still loving and respectful to them.

In this chapter we do find out a bit more about Tess and the family, that she is loved by the community and has developed great friendships with the girls of her same age.  She doesn’t think highly of her mother, who has had too many children and is mentally more a child then the mother of the household.  That has left Tess burdened with many household responsibilities and with yet another burden she goes to find the extended family…

Once arriving at the home of the d’Urbervilles she quickly realizes that this is not the home of titles and money, but rather of a new wealthy family, but having gone this far, does not turn back.

Of course the reader finds out that this is actually the home of the Stoke-d’Urbervilles, a wealthy family with no ties to the d’Urbervilles other then to have chosen the name out of a stack of other fancy sounding names meant to distance the family from its merchant routes.

Upon arriving at the home Tess meets Alexander, or Alec as Fifty Shades of Grey readers know him.  He’s standing outside and once the reason for her visit is explained, he explains that his mother is an invalid and he is the only son of the family.  He does not reveal that they are not d’Urbervilles and the way it is written, one could assume that he is aware of the “borrowing” of the name.

But never the less, Tess seems to be attracted to Alec and he to her.  At first glance he seems like a gentleman.  Until you take into account that he lets her go on thinking they are cousins, and that feeding her strawberries and showering her with roses might be a bit odd for cousins and perhaps a bit forward during Victorian times.

So yes, he gave her a tour of the grounds, FED her strawberries and gave her more to take home.  Then picked roses for her to put in her bosom (not my word). And apparently she has more then ample bosom for her age – Alec is a boob man!

WTF? For what it’s worth, she does try to decline these offers, but falls under his spell and goes along with all of this.  Poor girl, I don’t think Joan had, “the talk” with her.

Alec also makes an effort to have lunch with her without the interruption of his servants and almost steals a kiss from her before stopping himself.  He’s not sounding like a stand up guy by Victorian standards! But here is how Hardy narrates the story:

Thus the thing began. Had she perceived this meeting’s import she might have asked why she was doomed to be seen and coveted that day by the wrong man, and not by some other man, the right and desired one in all respects – as nearly as humanity can supply the right and desired; yet to him who amongst her acquaintance might have approximated to this kind, she was but a transient impression, half forgotten.

Hardy goes on, foreshadowing the doom that is to come.  Alec seems to go on to plot his debasement of Tess, and that pisses me off!

Breast Feeding the little ones or the BIG ONE!

Breast feeding has been a hot topic for the masses for years now, whether we are talking about breast feeding children versus using formula, age limits on how old your child should be when you start to wein them off, or if it even okay to breast feed in public.

What about the temptation for your significant other to imbibe during “Adult Time”? As Christian did with Ana in the Epilogue of Fifty Shades Freed.  For a couple that is used to breast play, is it just an added plus or is it inappropriate? Period!  What do you think,  can this make the bond stronger, or can the suggestion tear you apart?

Ladies and Gents, lets keep this as PG13 as you can.

Laters, Baby,

Relive a Fifty Shades of Grey Scene

Last week Gadling reported that a UK company is offering a private flight with chocolates, champagne and a discrete pilot.  You will fly a mile up and the flight lasts about an hour, just enough time…

At 4,999 Pounds it’s not the type of thing many people will be doing for just a night out.  But, I’m sure some of you have been saving for a rainy day. Or you could hoard some airline miles, use them for first class and sneak into the bathroom.  I would suggest Singapore Airlines or Emirates, they take first class to a new level.
