Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media – June 2013

Here is the media’s Fifty Shades of Grey news.  As always, we will write a full post of the bigger or more interesting news stories.

  • In stories I’m afraid of, we have an article about Lindsay Lohan NOT being Anastasia. WTF and who actually thought this was a good idea. There aren’t too many people I’m against, but she’s a hard limit!
  • There’s a new Kink for dummies book, except it’s called Kisses to Kink. So if Fifty Shades got you curious, this might be interesting… I haven’t read this book.
  • Yes, we now have Fifty Shades of Grey Greeting cards.  Marks & Spencer are now offering Fifty Shades of Grey greeting cards. Perfect for birthdays (mine is June 23, let me know if you need my address), notes to your Fifty friends, or kinky notes to your significant other.
  • Kelly Marcel’s (screenwriter for Fifty Shades of Grey) name has been thrown around as a possible screenwriter for The Little Mermaid. If it’s true, she’ll have quite an interesting career with some different types of projects.
  • The new name coming up for Anastasia is Glee’s Melissa Benoist. I haven’t watched Glee in a while so don’t know her acting, but I’m not hearing the most positive feedback on her for this role.
  • Selena Gomez’s name is reemerging as a possible Anastasia. I’m not sure she’s making the top of the list for many fans though.

Who’s Your Daddy…?

Did you know that Father’s Day was not signed into law, making it an official US holiday until 1972 by then U.S. President Richard Nixon?  Well now you do!

In honor of this great holiday celebrating our dads, I thought I would talk (or write) about Christian’s dad, Carrick and who might play the character in the movie.

RichardgereWhen I think of Carrick a small number of actor’s come to mind.  First one for me is Richard Gere.  I know he is a little older, but Gere is like a fine wine, he only seems to get better with age.

Dermot Mulroney is another actor that I think would make a good Carrick.  49 years old, with his salt and pepper hair and scar above his lip screams Carrick to me!

Who else do you think would be a good actor to fill the Carrick role?

Happy Father’s Day and Later, Baby!

Why I Want an Unknown to Play Christian Grey

As I ponder the casting of Christian Grey I’ve started to wonder about all these stars whose names keep coming up, like Matt Bomer, Ian Somerhalder, Henry Cavill, Alexander Skarsgard, Chris Hemsworth, Ryan Gosling, etc the list goes on and on and on.  The more I think of it, the less I like any of them.

HenryCavill2Yes, I see some great acting out of them and see glimpses of Christian Grey in each of them. But in the end, none of them is the whole package.  Nope, not even Matt Bomer.  Don’t worry, it’s not that I think any of these are bad choices, just not the perfect fit.

Here’s the problem, all of these actors are established, but tend to be associated with one character they have played.  I’ll always see Damon in Ian Somerhalder’s smirk, or Thor in Chris Hemsworth.

With an unknown, the actor will have the chance to really make the character their own, Their acting in the movie wont get mixed up with their previous work. They have a clean slate and so does the audience.  Of course there is the whole issue of the people who ONLY want their choice and WONT watch if someone else is selected.  With an unknown you might be unhappy it wasn’t your choice, but you also wont be against him because of any preconceive ideas about them.

How do you feel about having an unknown play Christian Grey?

Henry Cavill Good For Fifty Shades of Grey?

HenryCavill2While I was busy at work Zack Snyder mentioned that Henry Cavill would be good for Fifty Shades of Grey and it would be good for him too.

Zack Snyder was Henry’s director for Man of Steel, which is due out on June 15.  I’ll admit, I’m a Christopher Reeve Fan, he’s always been Superman for me.  It’s a tough adjustment, but over the last year he’s grown on me and I think I will be dragging myself out to see Man of Steel.  But Henry’s always been near the top of my list for Christian Grey, so I don’t need selling on him.

But here is what Zack Snyder said, according to the Examiner

During promotions this week the director agreed that Cavill would make a good fit for the “Fifty Shades of Grey” film. When asked if he would be a good casting choice he responded positively saying, “I think he would be great for the Fifty Shades movie, actually, he would be really good for it. That’d be interesting. It’s good for him too.”

Still no word on Team50s thoughts on casting, but it never hurts to have your last director recommend you.

For all you Matt Bomer fans who are stressing at this news.  It’s early yet, stop stressing.

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media – May 2013

Here’s a listing of what’s new in the Fifty Shades of Grey world for May of 2013.  I’m going to keep casting news on this post this month to keep my own brain organized. As always, whenever bigger or more interesting news comes out we will feature it with its own post.

  • I found a lovely drawing of a woman reading Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s a nice picture with a great setting.
  • IB Times is suggesting Minka Kelly for Anastasia? Haven’t seen her act, but the picture with it shows the right look.
  • Several media outlets are reporting that although the sale of physical books is down, the rise in the sale of e-books in 2012 is keeping the publishing industry afloat.  Of course, Fifty Shades of Grey has a lot to do with that. Thank you E L James!
  • The Rugby Observer is advertising a Fifty Shades of Grey Painting exhibit on May 4.  I have no idea where Rugby is, but I hope some fans from that area see this.
  • Stephen Amell went on Facebook and said he’s not interested in playing Christian Grey.  I guess it’s a good thing he finally read the books before too many people started to get attached. Screen Shot 2013-05-09 at 9.31.21 AM
  • Fifty Shades of Grey is moving up on the pirated books list in China. With the censorship laws in China you can’t get it legally so it’s being pirated. That’s the kind of pirating I like.
  • Ian Somerhalder recently tweeted that he was rehearsing for a film in London. And since E L James lives in London and Miss Marcel was apparently in London… Assumptions have been made that he might be working on Fifty Shades of Grey. I’m doubtful of this. First, there isn’t a director so I don’t think there would be formal auditions at this point, let alone anything that would be called a rehearsal.
  • In other news someone pointed out to me that Dana Brunetti was in New York around the same time and Matt Bomer was also in New York at the same time. Coincidence? Probably. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that a meeting to find out if Matt was interested happened, but I doubt that is the case.
  • The newest name to come up for Christian Grey is Hannibal’s Hugh Dancy.
  • After Maroon 5′s sexy video, Adam Levine’s name is coming up as a possible Christian Grey. I’m buying this one.
  • Zack Snyder, director for Man of Steel, has said that Henry Cavill would be good for Fifty Shades of Grey.

Winner of Elite 8 of Christian Grey

I’m sure most of you will not be surprised, even if you disagree. Matt Bomer is the winner of the Elite 8 of Christian Grey.  I will admit that when I envisioned this debating series I really thought the final round would be between Matt Bomer and Ian Somerhalder.  But the Jessie Pavelka fans came out and ousted Ian in the first round.  You spoke, we listened.  But I’m not ruling out the possibility of having a Matt vs Ian debate to hold us over while we wait for actual casting.

Here is a copy of the brackets:

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented, it’s always great to hear your thoughts.

Launching of a Long Storied Career?

Whether you are Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer, Nina Dovbrev, Alexis Bledel or any one of the number of actors that are rumored to be in the running for the lead roles in Fifty Shades of Grey, I wonder if in the back of their heads, they are worrying about whether or not this will actually hurt, rather than help their careers.

Will they be taken seriously as actors, once they are filmed in all their glory?  Or is it possible that they become pigeon holed, and rated a less than stellar actor?  Will every worth while director be clambering for them to be in their next epic story?

I’m of the mindset that this movie will be a plus to any actor that gets slated to join the film.  I think that this movie will allow the actors to show that they can play a menagerie of characters.  Like Leonardo DiCaprio, who played in Basketball Diaries and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

What do you think people, yay or nay, what are the pros and cons?

Unofficial Casting News for April 2013

Similar to my monthly media updates I thought I would start a monthly UNOFFICIAL casting post.  All the speculation: who’s in because they like sex, who’s out because they’re in a relationship.

  • Shailene Woodley is unlikely to play Ana because she’s signed with another movie.  I think, as this article says, that her role in Divergent will be a bigger obstacle as both films will have to work out schedules over several years to share her.
  • Selena Gomez’s name occasionally comes up as an Anastasia contender, but now her co-star Vanessa Hudgens is also being mentioned.  I’ll admit, I don’t know much about either, but I never took the Selena Gomez rumors seriously.
  • According to Gather, the newest name in the running for Anastasia is Poppy Gelevingne, a popular model. I’m not sure if it’s the blonde hair that throws me off or if he face is too slim and narrow, but visually I’m not seeing her as Ana. But as a Kate Kavanagh, now that would be a good fit.
  • Stephen Amell has admitted that his meeting regarding Fifty Shades of Grey was actually a meeting at Focus Features and the topic of Fifty Shades of grey was just one of many things discussed. I knew there was something missing in his comment!
  • Jensen Ackles’ name is now being thrown around for Christian Grey.  Ok, it’s been thrown around before, but it’s made a resurgence recently with some of the entertainment news.
  • In an interview, Alexander Skarsgard commented that he has not read the Fifty Shades of Grey books, but that if it has a good script and a good film maker he would be interested in the role of Christian.
  • Simon Baker from The Mentalist, has said he would like a role in Fifty Shades of Grey. He’s too old for Christian and since he hasn’t read the books, I think it’s a joke…
  • IBTimes is suggesting Eve Hewson, daughter of Bono, for Anastasia.  Other then her being the right age (22), and having brown hair, I have no idea if she has what it takes to play the role.
  • IBT has brought up a new name for Anastasia, Allison Williams for the HBO series, Girls.
  • FansShare is suggesting Keeley Hazell for Kate Kavanagh.  She’s pretty, but I wonder if she can act?
  • Wetpaint and others are reporting that Jennifer Lawrence is the top choice for Ana. She’s a great actress, Oscar winning, and although I don’t see her as Ana, I think she could do it.  And who wouldn’t want her in their film? One major problem with her. She’s filming Mockingjay from September through May of next year.
  • Alex Pettyfer is NOT confirmed for the movie.  He may have done a scene for Gus Van Sant, but that was not an audition or screen test.

In our first round here is Matt Bomer vs Jensen Ackles:

You can also vote in Henry Cavill vs Alexander Skarsgard, Stephen Amell vs Ryan Gosling, Ian Somerhalder vs Jessie Pavelka.
