Secretary The Movie

In preparation for Fifty Shades of Grey the movie, I have reviewed a few films that might give some insight into how the Fifty Shades movie might handle all the kinky sex.  There will be spoilers, consider yourself warned. Today I’ll start with the movie Secretary.

Secretary came out in 2002 and was directed by Steven Shainberg.  This movie is a little weird, it is set in, I think, the 70′s and stars Mr. Grey (E. Edward Grey).  Lee is the secretary and also happens to be a masochist.  Mr. Grey just happens to be a sadist. A match made in movie heaven.

The movie starts out with a preview of a scene that is in the middle of the movie and it might involve some kinky device.  We are quickly taken back to the beginning and getting to know Lee.  She’s got some issues, as in cutting herself…  She applies to be a secretary for Mr. Grey and is hired.

Edward and Lee have a strange relationship to start with, she socially awkward and he, well, turned on by her submissiveness.  Pretty quickly they endeavor on a BDSM relationship, much of which is implied.  Yes, there are some scenes that are not implied, but other then some spanking and masturbation, it’s a pretty clean movie given the subject matter. Except the closing scene, that’s pretty hot…

What the movie does well is show the sexual tension between Edward and Lee.  It shows how Edward starts to control Lee with his Dom/sub games and they endeavor on a BDSM relationship.  At the same time Lee start becomes a more stable person, more confident and less masochistic. And similar to how I wanted Christian and Ana to work out their weird relationship, you want Edward and Lee to too.

I got two things out of this movie.  You can have quite a bit of sex in a movie and still be Rated R (the pay off is at the end in this case) and you can imply a lot of stuff with camera angles…  You don’t need to make porn to have a good sex scene. Assuming you think porn has good sex scenes.

Have any of you seen the movie? What did you think?

Fifty Shades of Grey In The Media – January 2013

I’ve decided for 2013 I wanted to make a change in my writing of the Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media posts, where I talk about some of the smaller, but mentionable media stories.  Instead of doing one every week or so as stories come out, I’ve decided to make one for each month and then update it as stories come out.  Then I’ll just add the new stories to the top and change the date of posting to reflect when I posted the most recent article. We do have a few other things up our sleeves for this year, some you’ll notice, some you wont.

  • Fifty Shades of Grey made the top 10 list of wikipedia searches in 2012.
  • Digital Book World reports that the top 6 ebooks for 2012 were from the Hunger Games trilogy and Fifty Shades of Grey.  No surprise here, in spite of the interesting combination.
  • It seems E L James if the highest earning author in Ireland.  Again, I have to say I’m not terribly surprised about this.
  • Victoria’s Secret had mentioned a while ago that they were working on a Fifty Shades Unofficial line.  According to an article from Gather that line is expected to come out once the movie is cast.
  • On Tuesday, January 22 at 9PM EST on E! there will be a special about the Dom/sub lifestyle… Yes, my Tivo is set.
  • Ian Somerhalder has addressed the rumors about him playing Christian. In a Fanshare article he has said he is interested in the part but that at this point there is nothing official going on, just talk.  Sorry Ian fans!
  • According to Yahoo News, in Brazil (I think it’s happening in other places too) Fifty Shades of Grey has been pulled off of book store shelves until the books can be sealed and kept out of the prying eyes of children.  Ummm, there are lots of other sexy books on the shelves, do they need to be sealed?  AND, reading about sex and looking at pictures of naked woman in playboy – not the same thing!
  • According to The Telegraph, it seems that Fifty Shades of Grey hasn’t just impacted sex toy sales, but also wine sales.  Specifically South Africa’s Constantia dessert wine that is mentioned in Fifty Shades Darker and drank at the masquerade ball.
  • James Franco has made a documentary about Kink, the worlds largest producer of BDSM pornography.  I believe this is being shown at Sundance.  Cafe Stir has a preview of it.
  • SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody is headed to New Orleans.  It will be playing at Harrah’s from March 5 to March 17th!
  • 50 Shades The Musical is going to Raleigh, NC in April at the Progress Energy Theatre.  Tickets are on sale.
  • This article is actually a graduate paper on consumerism in Fifty Shades of Grey.  Interesting if you’re into that type of analysis.

The Captivating Diary of a Submissive

After reading Fifty Shades of Grey I became curious about the whole Dom/sub subculture.  So when I was offered a chance to review Diary of a Submissive, I jumped at it.

The About the Author is intriguing itself, “Sophie Morgan is in her early thirties and working hard at a career she loves as a journalist.  She spends too much money on books, DVDs, and handbags, mostly in that order.  The one thing missing in her life is someone to share it with… and she is still searching for someone to dominate her sexually, as well as help her sort the recycling.”

This book is not a novel like Fifty Shades of Grey, and it’s not a how to book on being a submissive.  But it’s a lovely and interesting story about the life of a submissive.  If you’ve ever wondered why a woman might want to submit and what is the mindset that goes through their head during a scene or a punishment, then this book is absolutely for you!

The book starts with a prologue and it captured my interest instantly.  I was captivated by the prologue, it sets a tone for the book that is continued through much of the book.

Sophie starts out by giving us some background on herself and her early dating and then slowly moves into her submissive side, just as she slowly learned about her submissive side.  Of course things heat up pretty quickly.

As I read it I started to think like a submissive, when the punishment got too intense I wondered if I should safe word and put the book down.  But, I continued to push myself and make it through and feel better for having read some of the crazier things.  Ok, that might be an exaggeration but I really did start to see the mind of a submissive. I wondered if my own stubborn side would kick in if I was in her place, even at times when I was thinking, “I would tell him to screw off and walk out.”

In response to the question regarding the different book covers, I contacted Sophie Morgan on Twitter @mssophiemorgan.  She said it was a publishers decision.  The US and Italy have the pearls on the cover and the UK has the rose.  Not uncommon in publishing.  Thanks Sophie for getting back to us.

Use It or Lose It…

Not knowing anyone personally (at least I don’t think so) that are in to to the BDSM Dom/sub lifestyle, I find myself wondering if there are many people out there that were formerly into the lifestyle and whether or not anyone truly stops being a Dom or sub.  Is it like that old adage “if you don’t use it, you lose it”?

What do  you think, does anyone truly stop being a Dom/sub? Does one have to keep in practice to not “lose it” or is it more like once you play, you can never go back?

Let me know what you think people!

More Women Seeking Christian Grey Type ‘Sugar Daddy’?…

The New York Daily News has written an article about more women seeking men who are wiling to be their “Christian Grey”, offering them all the bells (or silver balls) and whistles in a Dominant/sub relationship and monetary freedom (no its not a woman of the night ploy). Read the article here.  What do you think, has the trilogy caused more women to seek out these types of relationships or have they just caused more people to actually take notice?

A Synopsis of the News

Everyday I read articles about Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s been interesting!  I do NOT post most of what I read, it’s either repetitive, boring, or just plain old bad writing.  Some articles I walk away from mad and insulted, others shaking my head, sometimes laughing.  But sometimes the comments are the most interesting.  I thought I would share some of the highlights of what I have read, purely off the top of my head.

Fifty shades of Grey is smut, porn, erotic, a love story, a manual on sex.  It teaches woman to be submissive and allow men to control them.  Stalking is ok.  Woman are dumb for reading this either because the writing is so bad or because the story is so bad.

Oh, and some have said it objectifies men too.  My head is spinning!

The writing makes Stephanie Meyer’s writing look good.  But ironically another article analyzed the writing and found it was an 89% copy of Twilight.

Feminists think we’re taking a step back – allowing a much older man take advantage of a young woman.  Gosh, my Dad is 7 years older then my mother, what does that say about my Mom?

HE has a Red Room of Pain, never mind that SHE named it that and he never thought of it that way.

Kim Kardashian can read, but has only flipped through the books.  I think this is important since Kim Kardashaian and Fifty Shades of Grey in one article will drive a lot of traffic to your site.

Ian Somerhalder has actually started reading the books and is still interested in playing Christian.  Nina Debrov hasn’t ruled out playing Ana, but doesn’t think she should be playing opposite Ian.  Ryan Seacrest is enjoying the books.  I wonder if he’ll find a way to get himself into the movies as a cameo role?

There has been an increase in the sales of silver balls and other sex toys.  Or you could just go to a Fifty Shades of Grey party/demonstration event.

Christian’s don’t think Christians should be reading the books, something about it being against the bible.  Of course the most ardent supporters of not reading it are the ones who haven’t read it.

Fifty Shades of Grey is about a sex slave.  Huh?

Libraries are confused.  Some are banning, others have long wait lists and are ordering more books.

Kristen Stewart heard about the books from Robert Pattinson, is interested in reading it, but isn’t admitting to reading it.  She’s also not commenting on playing Ana.

Some news outlets are posting so much about Fifty Shades of Grey that the readers are getting sick of it, and think they’re just trying to drive new traffic to their site.

A lot of time is spent trying to figure out why woman like the book – the sex, we’re feeling less repressed, we’re feeling empowered, escapism, we want to be controlled by men.  The reasons go on and on.  In the end, they’re all trying to figure out what makes us tick so they can figure out what the next big thing will be.

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

An article from Salon.com about why some people become submissives. We have had a submissive post comments and it seems to be in line with what the article is saying.

A review of Adam Lambert’s new album Trespassing and how it might make some good music for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie.  Hmmm, this has possibilities.

Gilbert Gottfried reads Fifty Shades of Grey…  I’m not sure if you’ll want to laugh or cry.
