Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media – May 2013

Here’s a listing of what’s new in the Fifty Shades of Grey world for May of 2013.  I’m going to keep casting news on this post this month to keep my own brain organized. As always, whenever bigger or more interesting news comes out we will feature it with its own post.

  • I found a lovely drawing of a woman reading Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s a nice picture with a great setting.
  • IB Times is suggesting Minka Kelly for Anastasia? Haven’t seen her act, but the picture with it shows the right look.
  • Several media outlets are reporting that although the sale of physical books is down, the rise in the sale of e-books in 2012 is keeping the publishing industry afloat.  Of course, Fifty Shades of Grey has a lot to do with that. Thank you E L James!
  • The Rugby Observer is advertising a Fifty Shades of Grey Painting exhibit on May 4.  I have no idea where Rugby is, but I hope some fans from that area see this.
  • Stephen Amell went on Facebook and said he’s not interested in playing Christian Grey.  I guess it’s a good thing he finally read the books before too many people started to get attached. Screen Shot 2013-05-09 at 9.31.21 AM
  • Fifty Shades of Grey is moving up on the pirated books list in China. With the censorship laws in China you can’t get it legally so it’s being pirated. That’s the kind of pirating I like.

How did you come to read Fifty Shades of Grey?

In a very rare (for me) moment of “booklessness” I caught the tail end of an intriguing interview about it. Not knowing exactly what I was getting myself into I decided to check it out and the rest – as they say – is history.

Did you read an actual book or an ebook?

FSOG happened to be the first ebook I bought and read on my iPad and since then, I’ve never looked back. You gotta’ love buying a book with a single click then reading it within seconds – what bliss!

Which is your favorite book in the series?

It’s almost impossible for me to choose but if I absolutely had to it would be the last one, Freed.

What is your favorite scene in the series?

Scene, as in singular? Are you kidding? Uhm, well apart from every time Christian throws Ana over his shoulder and every time he’s insanely, unreasonably jealous and possessive the best I can do is narrow it down to two. The scene where he gives her hickeys on their honeymoon in retaliation for going topless and the short dress scene in Aspen. Oh boy, that was delicious!

How many times have you read the series?

Just once! (Blush)… Okay, maybe twice?…. Oh, all right! I lost count at eight, cover to cover, back to back….. It’s bad I know! What can I say? I wanted… more…

Outside of Fifty Shades of Grey, what is your favorite book or series?

I adore Sylvia Day’s Crossfire series and recently discovered, thanks to one of my readers, the Jodi Ellen Malpas’ This Man series – intense but highly addictive.

Are you married, dating, or single?

I’m married to the best guy! He proof reads my work but lately I’ve been hearing mumblings about how much better he thinks it would be if I threw in a couple of aliens! Mmmhhh, not sure my readers would go for that though; I must admit that hubby reading Fifty Shades Meander does come with some inherent benefits… (Wink, wink)

Who would you like to see play Christian and Anastasia in the movie?

For Christian I’m a big Jesse Pavelka fan but I’ll settle for Ian Somerhalder, if only for those eyes…

For Ana I’m a little more flexible but I like Kristen Kreuk and Alexis Bledel for the part.

I started on Fanfiction in May 2012 but moved to my own site in October of the same year.

What is the goal or mission of your fanpage/website?

Apart from keeping the FSOG story alive I wanted to communicate with my readers. We share books and the various shades of obsessions, we chat and we have a laugh. It’s so much more personal than Fanfiction messaging. I feel like they’ve become friends. If publication happens to come along, well then, that would be just dandy!

When will this movie come out already!

This week The Hollywood Reporter published an interview with Universal Chairman Adam Fogelson.  The interview covers a lot of different material, so I’ll just give you the Fifty Shades bit:

THR: Give us an update on the Fifty Shades movie. Some think you aren’t moving quickly enough to capitalize on the buzz.

Fogelson: I certainly understand why some people might take that point of view. But I don’t believe that [author EL James] had any interest in going to a studio where rushing it into production was the vision. I don’t believe that the second or third film would have benefited from that strategy. And I think that there are totally legitimate questions about what this book is as a movie. I will tell you that it is an absolute priority for us. It’s conceivable that we could be ready to release it as early as next summer.

Me: WHAT, summer to 2014?  Ok, there had been some rumblings recently that it was going to be a 2014 release. With no Director or cast at this point, a 2013 release is pretty much impossible anyway.  Especially if you want a quality film and I think most of us don’t want them to rush and make a crap film, Christian and Ana deserve better then that.

THR: Is it true you asked Angelina Jolie to direct?

Fogelson: No. We’re involved in a different project [the World War II drama Unbroken] with her. But we have had really, really interesting, great conversations with talented, serious filmmakers.

Me: I’m not a big Angelina Jolie (the actress) fan, but I know a lot of people would like to see her direct this film.  But she’s directing Unbroken, holy cow! How did I not know this?    If you haven’t read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, who also wrote Seabiscuit, it’s a great story that is about as far from Fifty Shades of Grey as you can get.

Without giving much away about the book, Olympic runner joins Air Force in WWII, plane gets shot down, drifts in the Pacific Ocean until he ends up in Japan and is a POW to a man who make Mrs. Robinson seem nurturing. It also happens to be a true story.  If you ever thought your life sucked, read this book, you’ll never think it again.

I thought this was an interesting development because Angelina has been linked to Fifty Shades of Grey as a possible director.  Although it’s just speculation, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear her name announced as the director of Fifty Shades of Grey.  With the hit that Unbroken could be the potential for this big.  Unbroken, as a New York Times Best Selling book, whose authors last movie adaptation was nominated for Oscars and the type of story that could bring more Oscars…

The other thing is Fogelson’s comment is that they have been talking to directors.  I’ll infer two things from this.  Even if the 1st draft of the script isn’t done, there must have been a lot of progress.  Second, the director list is getting trimmed, if not short.  But, Angelina may not be on it.  Fogelson says they didn’t discuss Fifty Shades (but have discussed it with others) and she’s now tied up with another big film so she may not be available to make Fifty Shade of Grey too.

Yes, that is totally contradictory to what I just said before, just think of me typing this as I brainstorm the possibilities.

Fifty Shades to The Rescue!

EL James’s Fifty Shades Trilogy has not only been credited with saving many a tepid, ice cold, sexless marriage, but now is being credited with saving an entire town!

What is that you’re saying? How can this be? Well, let me tell you a little story…

The town of Millinocket, Maine is home to the Great Northern Paper Company.  What began as a solid paper mill, Great Northern Paper company had to downsize in the later 90s due to publishing companies outsourcing their paper needs to other countries. GNP lost a lot of business and had to close many of their plants, and lay off hundreds of workers, including 400 workers in the small town of East Millinocket.

Here’s where Fifty Shades comes to the rescue… Cate Street Capital bought the GNP plant in East Millinocket and quickly signed a deal to produce 3,000 tons of paper that were needed to print E.L. James’ novel: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. Business has never been better for GNP and they have even opened up their mills again!

Lions, Tigers, and Horses OH MY!…

According to the website Entertainmentwise.com , E.L James, who is currently worth approximately 32 million dollars, recently splurged on what is certain to be the first of 3 colts.  The first colt has recently been purchased and is said to be name “Fifty Shades of Grey”.  The other 2 colts, to be bought in the upcoming year will round out “Team Fifty”.  Each horse is allegedly going to be named after each one of E.L’s books.

I don’t know about you gals and guys, but I’m sure her kids would prefer another type of horse, as in horse power, under the hood of an R8 maybe?

Congrats on the purchase of the first of your 3 colts E.L.. May they be as swift as Ana when she is out maneuvering the unknown stalker!

Will there be a 4th Fifty Shades of Grey book????

On Friday night Team Twilight posted a story about a 4th Fifty Shades of Grey book:

“While waiting to get E L James’ autograph, a rep for Vintage books (the company that published Fifty Shades of Grey) was speaking to those of us gathered in the autograph line. When he mentioned off-hand to me and a few of the other fans gathered there that there was “something exciting” about to happen in the Fifty Shades universe, we all leaned in to listen, which is when he announced that there would be a (shhhhhhhh!) FOURTHFIFTY SHADES NOVEL. I sprang into action, and asked as many questions as I could.

There’s a fourth one?
Yeah, there’s a fourth one coming.
What’s it about?
Yeah, she just threw it to her publisher. Her publisher was telling me about it. I was like “Really?” She was like, “Yeah!” I was like, “I don’t believe you. This woman’s a three-book phenomenon. It’s not a fourth book.” So she pulled it up on her computer, it was there. I’ve seen it.
And you’ve read it?
I’ve read the first five pages.”

Apparently this will be in a magazine to be released on Aug 28.  It’s a magazine devoted to Fifty Shades of Grey by Topix Media Lab.  Mags and I will be on line Tuesday morning for it, waiting to see if our interview made it into the magazine. Oh, yea and we want to see what it says about this fourth book.

Is it a 4th book or the first book from Christian’s perspective?  Hmmm, both are tantalizing.  E L James has commented in the past that she doesn’t like to write from Christian’s POV, but she also made a clean ending in Freed with the epilogue.

And when it is coming out?

I would guess not too soon, wouldn’t want it to compete with her husbands book coming out in September.  Maybe a Christmas release?  And do husbands buy it for wives or do wives buy it for husbands???????

I will say that I had heard this rumor a few weeks ago somewhere, but since it didn’t get any traction I didn’t give it much thought.  Also, she has in the past indicated she was working on other stories.  But as this is supposed to be in a magazine and a publicist is mentioning it at a book signing, it sounds awful real.  So, do I take a day off of work to read it when it comes out?

Update: When I initially was looking into this I didn’t see anything on EL James’ Twitter page, later on I was able to track down some @replies she had sent to others and then she @replied “@flutterby3357 @50Latersbaby @teamtwilighters this is not true… sorry!”

Sadly, it seems this is not true.  But hold out hope that she might one day write another book about Fifty Shades of Grey.  Until then, we can dream about who will play Christian and Ana in the film.
