Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media – April 2013

Here is the media’s Fifty Shades of Grey news.  As always, we will write a full post of the bigger or more interesting news stories.

  • Vote for E L James for the Time 100 Poll, the people that are most influential in the world.  Voteing ends on April 12 and the finalized list will be revealed on April 18.
  • WhatCulture has an article about 10 Moments that wont make the movie. While there are some inaccuracies and some of the points are kinda silly (it goes from spelling out how it wont be porn to proposing a PG-13 rating).  There are a few good points in there too.
  • Betty Ford’s family has said that if she was still alive she would have read Fifty Shades of Grey, I thought that was cute. The question is, would she have commented on it publically?
  • FansShare has an article about how Kelly Marcel is taking too long to write the script for Fifty Shades of Grey.  The article claims that recent reports say that the script is months away. It does not mention what reports they are referring to or who made the claim.  In contrast to this, we have heard from Universal/Focus Features that they have started talking to Directors. This story isn’t adding up to me.
  • The Wrap is reporting that Gus Van Sant has made a video/scene from the Fifty Shades of Grey film with Alex Pettyfer. The scene is of when Christian takes Ana’s virginity.  Gus Van Sant’s name has come up as a possible director a couple times and he has done some films for Focus Features. I wouldn’t rule out this rumor just yet. As for Alex Pettyfer, I don’t see it.

Cinematic Language Doesn’t Have To Be Explicit

Michael_De_Luca

Michael De Luca

At CinemaCon in Las Vegas Universal’s Chairman Adam Fogelson discussed the model of movies and DVD’s.  The article in The Hollywood Reporter is interesting if you’re interested in the industry.

What I found more interesting was the comment by Michael De Luca:

On the subject of adult movies, panelist Michael De Luca addressed his planned film based on E.L. James’ best-seller Fifty Shades of Grey. Reminding the crowd “that the movie will be different from the book,” the producer said, “The book is literal by design. … The cinematic language doesn’t have to be explicit.”

So, what does this mean? We’ll have to wait another year or so to find out, but I’ll speculate.

Yes, there will be sex in the film.  Will you see anything close to what’s in porn?  NO, you’ll see sex more like you see sex in other main stream films.  Key body parts covered, side angles, close ups of faces, hands, etc.  We might get some partial nudity, but not nudity for the sake of nudity.

The challenge is in showing the Playroom in a non-threatening way.  Or seeing it through Ana’s eyes.  Spanish Inquisition to Thomas Tallis to the belt at the end.  There’s a lot more to the Red Room of Pain then some sex toys. The room itself and what goes on inside will be a challenge at times.

I think this is also an indication that the producers are trying to step up the game of the romance movie.  Take it to a new level, without it being just about sex or just about the romance.  A better blending of the two then you’ve seen in the past.  Feeling the sexual tension instead of just watching it unfold.

In a book the author can tell you what you need to know, a great author makes you feel it.  A good movie shows you the sex.  In Fifty Shades of Grey I think we’ll feel the sex.

This is, I think the point and the goal with this movie.  From what I’ve seen of the films that Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti have made, they like to make really good movies, not cookie cutter movies.  They like to work outside the box and this film will force them to continue to do that.

The Elite 8 of Christian Grey

Last Fall Mags and I hosted a Sweet 16 of Anastasia Steele debate.  We chose the 16 biggest actresses that had been attached to playing Anastasia at the time, some have gone off the radar since then and a few have come on the scene.  In a surprising finale, Ashley Greene beat out Alexis Bledel, but it was close.

This Spring we thought we would do an Elite 8 for casting Christian Grey.  We’ll be using the Birdfeud system like we did with the Sweet 16, but in an upgrade to their system, you will be able to vote using your Facebook account.

We know that some of you will be unhappy to see your choice is not on list, but we could only pick 8.  You are welcome let us know your choice in the comments section. Here are our choices (with IMDB links) and the brackets:

Matt Bomer, Jensen Ackles, Jessie Pavelka, Ian Somerhalder, Henry Cavill, Alexander Skarsgard, Stephen Amell and Ryan Gosling.

Elite8Round1

We’ll start posting the debates next week.

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media – March 2013

Here’s the running tab of Fifty Shades of Grey in the media for March of 2013:

  • SPANK will be in New Orleans, Chicago, Upper Darby – PA, Columbus – OH, and Kansas City. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
  • Matt Bomer has revealed his favorite places in New York City.  Ok, it’s not exactly Fifty Shades related, but we’re in NYC so we thought it was cool.
  • The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Smash Pictures is countersuing Universal for their lawsuit, claiming copyright infringement of Fifty Shades of Grey.  Smash is claiming that the story is public domain.  I’m not lawyer, but I’m thinking that E L James owns her own work.
  • Lovehoney has announced the release of the Fifty Shades of Grey Pleasure Collection in the United States for April 8.
  • The Hollywood Reporter reports that Anonymous reports that they found a document in a German Studio attaching Emma Watson to the Fifty Shades of Grey film.  The studio says the document is outdated, proof that it existed. But there is no indication that this was even a serious document, particularly since the company is linked with Summit Entertainment, not a Universal subsidiary.
  • The Hollywood Reporter is reporting a deal was settled between Smash Pictures and Universal in regards to the XXX adaptation.  Smash is paying an undisclosed amount and cannot distribute the film anymore.
  • Kate Moss has read Fifty Shades of Grey for charity, watch on Youtube.
  • The Washington Post reports that Fifty Shades of Grey has been on their bestseller list for 50 weeks.  What a lovely number.
  • The Escala penthouse has been sold, the owners are not named Grey.
  • Random House has sold 70 MILLION copies of the Fifty Shades of Grey series. Operating earnings for Random House increased 76% last year. Random House thanks Fifty Shades of Grey and a few other books for their overall sucess last year.
  • Marketwire reports that the Fifty Shades of Grey Official Pleasure Collection is coming to Canada, I know a lot of Canadian’s are pleased with PinkCherry for bring this to them.

A Movie With A View

As I was flying back from vacation a couple off days ago the airline was showing Breaking Dawn Part Two.  A great end to a an even greater trip, I sat back with a drink and enjoyed the movie.

The last scene in the movie is Bella and Edward in the field of flowers when Bella uses her power to allow Edward finally see into her mind and her memories of her relationship with him.  It’s one of my favorite moments in the series, when Edward finally is able to see how much Bella has loved him since the very beginning.

It got me thinking about Fifty Shades.  I’d love to see Christian’s viewpoint throughout parts of the movie, the first time he laid eyes on Ana, her graduation, their first date, even Ana’s rejection.

What would you like to see from Christian’s viewpoint?

Fifty Shades of Grey Casting News

No, there is no official word on casting.  But since we don’t talk too much about casting on the site (check us out on Twitter @50Latersbaby or Facebook for more news on casting) I thought I would do a quick update on some of the more recent casting news.

  • Stephen Amell has said he has had meetings about Fifty Shades of Grey.  No news on who he met with though.
  • There are theories that if Ian Somerhalder does Fifty Shades of Grey he and Nina Dobrev’s relationship wont survive.  Hmmm, I guess the press doesn’t think much of their relationship.
  • Ryan Gosling is taking a break from acting, so he’s out.
  • Apparently there is no news on Matt Bomer, there is just mention of a new Youtube fanmade trailer with him in it.
  • Annonymous found something linking Emma Watson to the film, but she went to Twitter with a snarky comment about how she wouldn’t do it.
  • Alexis Bledel signed on with a new TV show and may not have time to be in the Fifty Shades of Grey film.
  • Mila Kunis also said she wont be in Fifty Shades of Grey. But that comment sounded like “go the fuck away and stop asking about it,” more then her saying she wont do it.
  • Nikki Reed might play Anastasia since she knows Dana Brunetti.

I’m sorry if I missed your favorite.  A lot of other stars have been mentioned, but it’s not actual “news.” So yes, Henry Cavill, Alexandra Daddario, Emilia Clarke, Lucy Hale, Alexander Skarsgard and many others are all still in the running.  Or they at least they haven’t publically declined to be in the movie.

Sex In The Movies

When was the last time you saw a sex scene in a movie so good that you were actually uncomfortable to watch it with certain people like your parents?  Those of us who grew up in the 80′s and 90′s remember movies like Risky Business, Fatal Attraction, Unfaithful, and Indecent Proposal with their seductively scorching scenes.  Entertainment Weekly delved into the suddenly missing movie staple.

Screenwriters are either leaving them out of the movie entirely, figuring why bother, it’s going to wind up on the cutting room floor anyway, or curbing the intensity of the scene.  The idea is that by keeping a PG13 movie from an R rating, they are able to reach a larger audience.

With the ability to just go online or to one of your cable channel’s series like Game of Thrones, Girls, True Blood and the like people are less willing to pay to see a main stream movie in the theater.

For me, I would prefer that if a movie is going to have a sex scene, that it be an integral part of the movie that helps it move the story along.

While we do know that Fifty Shades is expected to come out sometime in the summer of 2014, there is still no director or actors attached to the movie.  Will Team 50 throw caution to the wind and go all the way (to an NC-17) rating or keep it R rated.  With sex being such an integral part of the series it is going to be difficult to walk the line.

Do you think we will continue to see a decline in sex in the movies?  How can Team 50 keep true to the story but not overstep the R rating line?

The Waiting Game

As much as I tend to enjoy a little delayed gratification (under the right circumstances) I must admit that there have been a couple of times recently where I have thought I couldn’t take it anymore…I can’t wait to see whose going to play Christian and Ana and the rest of the Kinky Fuckery crew of Fifty Shades!  Am I the only one?  Or is it out of sight, out of mind for you?  What do you think, how much longer is the waiting game going to be?  Is Team Fifty playing the Dom and we the subs begging for a release (press or date)?  What are your thoughts?

What is E L James up to in LA?

With E L James in Los Angeles since this weekend there has been a lot of buzz about what she’s been doing. Most of it is speculation regarding what she’s been tweeting.  Here is a review:

Erika came in to LA on Friday and didn’t waste any time seeing Kelly Marcel (screenwriter) and perhaps picking up some interesting reading material.  She’s also been out with the producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca, even got to ride is Dana’s Tesla!

So, the band is back together, what fabulous news.  But the question is what are they discussing.  The only thing tweeted about her seeing Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca has been regarding social events.  While I’m sure Fifty probably came up, I doubt they were discussing the script, actors or directors in public.  Dana Brunetti also flew out of LA over the weekend and hasn’t said he’s back.  But he did tweet about meeting Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.  Hmm, maybe he’s working on the soundtrack.  JOKING!

Back to EL James, on Tuesday she spent he day with Kelly Marcel and burned the evidence.

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 3.16.48 AM

I guess the script isn’t done yet, but it’s getting there… While the timing of this trip may have been about the Oscars, this is definitely a working trip too.

As for the Oscars, apparently Erika was chatty at the Vanity Faire party.  As Mags mentioned on Tuesday, she said her next book will be less raunchy and she’ll be using a pseudonym.  WHAT? That’s just crazy!  But she also said that she has a few actors in mind (old news) and that she thinks we’ll be surprised by her choices.

Hmmm, does that mean we should give up on Matt Bomer, Ian Somerhalder or whoever the “favorite” is each day?  I’m not going that far, but I’m sticking with my idea of not getting too attached to anyone.  But several months ago I did predict that Ryan Gosling would get the role and his name has not come up as a “favorite” in a while…  As for Ana, I think it will be a relatively unknown.  Now that would be a surprise name to everyone.

Now that I’ve laid my predictions regarding Christian and Ana onto the internet, we still need the director to be named before we find out who will play Christian and Ana.  We know that Universal/Team50 has been talking with some directors, so it’s likely we’re not looking at a long list anymore, but how short is the list?  At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if they announced the director as E L James gets on a plane back home.  But I think another month or two is more realistic.

Finally Erika ended her day with some Twilight:

The Sweet 16 of Anastasia Steele Actresses

For those of you who are basketball fans, you know all about March Madness and the Sweet 16.  It’s the top 16 teams in college basketball playing to see who is #1.  You’ve probably seen the brackets for it with the 8 teams on each side, winners of each game moving on to play other winners.  Here’s a link to the brackets from last year if you need a visual.  For the Sweet 16 of Ana we want to find what actress the fans want to play Ana in the Fifty Shades movie.

In no particular order, here are the brackets for the Sweet 16 of Anastasia Steele:

Here is how this will work, we will post a debate for each of the pairs, Alexis Bledel vs Emma Watson, Amanda Seyfried vs Lucy Hale, etc.  The winner of each debate will go on to be debated by the winner of the neighboring debate.  Winner of Alexis Bledel vs Emma Watson will go against the winner of Amanda Seyfried vs Lucy Hale.  We will post 1 debate a day and each debate will last for 5 days in the first round.  We will likely increase that as we get further into the tournament.

Let us know if you have any questions about this process in the comments section.  Thank you and good luck to the actresses.
