Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media – May 2013

Here’s a listing of what’s new in the Fifty Shades of Grey world for May of 2013.  I’m going to keep casting news on this post this month to keep my own brain organized. As always, whenever bigger or more interesting news comes out we will feature it with its own post.

  • I found a lovely drawing of a woman reading Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s a nice picture with a great setting.
  • IB Times is suggesting Minka Kelly for Anastasia? Haven’t seen her act, but the picture with it shows the right look.
  • Several media outlets are reporting that although the sale of physical books is down, the rise in the sale of e-books in 2012 is keeping the publishing industry afloat.  Of course, Fifty Shades of Grey has a lot to do with that. Thank you E L James!
  • The Rugby Observer is advertising a Fifty Shades of Grey Painting exhibit on May 4.  I have no idea where Rugby is, but I hope some fans from that area see this.
  • Stephen Amell went on Facebook and said he’s not interested in playing Christian Grey.  I guess it’s a good thing he finally read the books before too many people started to get attached. Screen Shot 2013-05-09 at 9.31.21 AM
  • Fifty Shades of Grey is moving up on the pirated books list in China. With the censorship laws in China you can’t get it legally so it’s being pirated. That’s the kind of pirating I like.
  • Ian Somerhalder recently tweeted that he was rehearsing for a film in London. And since E L James lives in London and Miss Marcel was apparently in London… Assumptions have been made that he might be working on Fifty Shades of Grey. I’m doubtful of this. First, there isn’t a director so I don’t think there would be formal auditions at this point, let alone anything that would be called a rehearsal.
  • In other news someone pointed out to me that Dana Brunetti was in New York around the same time and Matt Bomer was also in New York at the same time. Coincidence? Probably. I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that a meeting to find out if Matt was interested happened, but I doubt that is the case.
  • The newest name to come up for Christian Grey is Hannibal’s Hugh Dancy.

Jessie Pavelka vs Ian Somerhalder – Elite 8 of Christian Grey

Last week Mags and I decided to have a little fun while we await the casting of Christian Grey and have an Elite 8 of Christian Grey, similar to our Sweet 16 of Anastasia Steele that we did last year. To vote just tweet or FB post your comment for your choice.

In our first round here is Jessie Pavelka vs Ian Somerhalder:

You can also vote in Henry Cavill vs Alexander SkarsgardMatt Bomer vs Jensen AcklesStephen Amell vs Ryan Gosling

The Elite 8 of Christian Grey

Last Fall Mags and I hosted a Sweet 16 of Anastasia Steele debate.  We chose the 16 biggest actresses that had been attached to playing Anastasia at the time, some have gone off the radar since then and a few have come on the scene.  In a surprising finale, Ashley Greene beat out Alexis Bledel, but it was close.

This Spring we thought we would do an Elite 8 for casting Christian Grey.  We’ll be using the Birdfeud system like we did with the Sweet 16, but in an upgrade to their system, you will be able to vote using your Facebook account.

We know that some of you will be unhappy to see your choice is not on list, but we could only pick 8.  You are welcome let us know your choice in the comments section. Here are our choices (with IMDB links) and the brackets:

Matt Bomer, Jensen Ackles, Jessie Pavelka, Ian Somerhalder, Henry Cavill, Alexander Skarsgard, Stephen Amell and Ryan Gosling.

We’ll start posting the debates next week.

Fifty Shades of Grey Casting News

No, there is no official word on casting.  But since we don’t talk too much about casting on the site (check us out on Twitter @50Latersbaby or Facebook for more news on casting) I thought I would do a quick update on some of the more recent casting news.

  • Stephen Amell has said he has had meetings about Fifty Shades of Grey.  No news on who he met with though.
  • There are theories that if Ian Somerhalder does Fifty Shades of Grey he and Nina Dobrev’s relationship wont survive.  Hmmm, I guess the press doesn’t think much of their relationship.
  • Ryan Gosling is taking a break from acting, so he’s out.
  • Apparently there is no news on Matt Bomer, there is just mention of a new Youtube fanmade trailer with him in it.
  • Annonymous found something linking Emma Watson to the film, but she went to Twitter with a snarky comment about how she wouldn’t do it.
  • Alexis Bledel signed on with a new TV show and may not have time to be in the Fifty Shades of Grey film.
  • Mila Kunis also said she wont be in Fifty Shades of Grey. But that comment sounded like “go the fuck away and stop asking about it,” more then her saying she wont do it.
  • Nikki Reed might play Anastasia since she knows Dana Brunetti.

I’m sorry if I missed your favorite.  A lot of other stars have been mentioned, but it’s not actual “news.” So yes, Henry Cavill, Alexandra Daddario, Emilia Clarke, Lucy Hale, Alexander Skarsgard and many others are all still in the running.  Or they at least they haven’t publically declined to be in the movie.

Like To Watch?…

Television you dirty birds!  Since a number of my favorite picks for the movie are either on a current television show or an old one, I have found myself looking them up on Netflix as I wait with bated breath for release!

Like Alexis Bledel for Ana, watch a little Gilmore Girls.  Catch Ian Somerhalder on your local CW channel Thursday nights.  Matt Bomer is always dashing on White Collar on USA channel.

I have also started another read through of the trilogy, but now I am trying to keep and open mind and picturing other actors in the roles.

What are you doing to while away the hours?

Fifty Shades of Grey In The Media – January 2013

I’ve decided for 2013 I wanted to make a change in my writing of the Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media posts, where I talk about some of the smaller, but mentionable media stories.  Instead of doing one every week or so as stories come out, I’ve decided to make one for each month and then update it as stories come out.  Then I’ll just add the new stories to the top and change the date of posting to reflect when I posted the most recent article. We do have a few other things up our sleeves for this year, some you’ll notice, some you wont.

  • Fifty Shades of Grey made the top 10 list of wikipedia searches in 2012.
  • Digital Book World reports that the top 6 ebooks for 2012 were from the Hunger Games trilogy and Fifty Shades of Grey.  No surprise here, in spite of the interesting combination.
  • It seems E L James if the highest earning author in Ireland.  Again, I have to say I’m not terribly surprised about this.
  • Victoria’s Secret had mentioned a while ago that they were working on a Fifty Shades Unofficial line.  According to an article from Gather that line is expected to come out once the movie is cast.
  • On Tuesday, January 22 at 9PM EST on E! there will be a special about the Dom/sub lifestyle… Yes, my Tivo is set.
  • Ian Somerhalder has addressed the rumors about him playing Christian. In a Fanshare article he has said he is interested in the part but that at this point there is nothing official going on, just talk.  Sorry Ian fans!
  • According to Yahoo News, in Brazil (I think it’s happening in other places too) Fifty Shades of Grey has been pulled off of book store shelves until the books can be sealed and kept out of the prying eyes of children.  Ummm, there are lots of other sexy books on the shelves, do they need to be sealed?  AND, reading about sex and looking at pictures of naked woman in playboy – not the same thing!
  • According to The Telegraph, it seems that Fifty Shades of Grey hasn’t just impacted sex toy sales, but also wine sales.  Specifically South Africa’s Constantia dessert wine that is mentioned in Fifty Shades Darker and drank at the masquerade ball.
  • James Franco has made a documentary about Kink, the worlds largest producer of BDSM pornography.  I believe this is being shown at Sundance.  Cafe Stir has a preview of it.
  • SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody is headed to New Orleans.  It will be playing at Harrah’s from March 5 to March 17th!
  • 50 Shades The Musical is going to Raleigh, NC in April at the Progress Energy Theatre.  Tickets are on sale.
  • This article is actually a graduate paper on consumerism in Fifty Shades of Grey.  Interesting if you’re into that type of analysis.

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

Fifty Shades of Grey was named the most popular fiction book of 2012 in the UK’s National Book awards.  Congratulations to E L James on another award!

The Daily Mail reports that 73% of people are reporting that their sex lives improved in 2012!  We hope you’re among the 73%!

Ian Somerhalder is in a Time Framed official teaser trailer, Time Framed is apparently going to be 6 short films staring Ian Somerhalder.  The entertainment press is saying this is a great audition tape for Christian

Grey and I don’t necessarily disagree; but, the clips are so short I’m not sure it’s give quite enough.  If you want more info on the films, this is the official website.

A Friendly Debate: Ian or Matt?

Sorry, but when we converted to the new website we lost the debate, even worse.  I don’t remember who won.  Maybe we’ll have to do this again.

We’re going to try out a new debate system.  I have some other ideas for this in the future, but wanted to start with an easy one.  I know everyone has their own Christian Grey.  But Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer are the two biggest names out there at the moment.  After watching some of their work I like them both, I think it depends on which of the fifty shades of Christian we’re talking about as to which I would choose.  If you want to read more on my thoughts of who should play Christian you can check out these two posts:
http://www.latersbaby.net/2012/08/my-pick-for-christian-grey.html
http://www.latersbaby.net/2012/09/more-actors-who-could-play-christian.html

But we thought we would let you gals help me choose between Matt Bomer and Ian Somerhalder.  Commence the debate, but remember, this wont have any impact on who is chosen so please be nice to each other (and the actors too).

More Actors Who Could Play Christian

A few weeks ago I did a post about actors who might be able to play Christian Grey, like Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer, among others.  I thought I would do an update and check out some other actors whose names come up.

Chris Zylka – Best known as the Amazing Spiderman.  I absolutely loved him as Spiderman.  He’s cute, funny, has unruly hair, and saves small children.  But, I can’t see him as Christian.  He’s just too cute and young.  And when I look at his other work, I’m freaked out that he was on Hannah Montana in 2009. Not that there is anything wrong with Hannah Montana, but it feeds into the youngish feeling.  I could see him play Ethan thought. Owell, it looks like he’s busy with Spiderman films anyway, and probably has a contract that will make him hard to schedule with.

Henry Cavill – Best known for his role in The Tudors, but also was in Immortals, The Count of Monte Cristo and Dunhill Ads.  He is awful hot in the Dunhill ads, but there is a big difference between a commercial and a movie.  I tried to watch Immortals, but couldn’t get past 10 or 11 minutes before giving up. I did watch a few episodes of The Tudors, he has a supporting role so he’s not on screen a lot.  But he does have a devilish and sexy look.  I can see why people like him and I think he is up to the role, but I wouldn’t put him as my first choice. But don’t forget he’s the new Superman, which may make him tough to schedule with too.

Jessie Pavelka – His name pops up from time to time.  He’s done a lot of TV stuff, nothing that really jumps out at me though.  He is hot though and definitely has the looks for a Christian.

Alexander Skarsgard – Best known for his role in True Blood.  I tried to watch this series, but it’s too weird for my taste.  But he’s definitely hot.  Not quite what I picture as Christian, but I can see why others might like him. He seems to be pursuing another film at the moment where he would play a pedophile, Lolita.

Armie Hammer – I’ve seen him in The Social Network and Mirror Mirror.  He’s cute, he’s a good actor, but almost too perfect looking for Christian and his unruly hair.

Michael Fassbender – I saw him in Inglorious Bastards and he’s a good actor. He’s also been in Prometheus and X-Men First Class, I don’t think either role is the type where I’m going to see much of a Christian type of character.  He did play Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre though, perhaps good practice for playing Christian? He’s totally not what I picture Christian as looking like.  He is 35 and does look a bit too old for Christian.

William Levy’s name seems to come up a fair amount too, but since he’s done primarily Spanish language stuff, there’s not much chance of me figuring out if he’s any good.  But he does look good.

In the interest of keeping myself from getting disappointed I’m not getting my heart set on anyone since I have no control over who gets selected.  But I would say Ian Somerhalder and Matt Bomer top my list.

My Pick for Christian Grey?

I thought I would do a little review of some of the actors who might be up for the role of Christian Grey.  I’m discounting things like hair color and physique which can easily be changed.  I’m also staying out of the gay thing.  I’m also a little flexible on age as makeup can add or remove a FEW years easily.

Ryan Gosling – Probably best known for his work in The Notebook.  I watched this movie recently and it was good, but it didn’t blow me away.  I watched it thinking about the possibility of Ryan playing Christian and I just didn’t see it.  His role in The Notebook didn’t show a wide range of acting skills.
I then went on to watch The Ides of March, Ryan plays a very different character and although his character is no Christian Grey, it did show a whole different set of acting skills.  Again, he was good in this movie, but not great.

So then I went and watched Crazy Stupid Love and this movie I thought showed even more of his acting skills. Ryan’s character showed a bit more of a similar character arc as Christian, though not nearly as intense as fiftyish.  And he and Emma Stone had a conversation in the movie that was a bit Fifty Shadesesque, until it went down some crazy sappy road, but it was there for a minute.

Between the three movies I could see him do a good job as Christian, but he doesn’t have quite the look I visualize Christian as having and he didn’t look that great in suits in The Ides of March. A month or so ago I predicted that he would get the role, I have no insider knowledge so it’s just a guess.  I can live with this choice, but it’s not mine.

Ian Somerhalder - Best known for his role in Vampire Diaries, I had never watched the show before I started this research.  But, after just a few episodes I can see why people want him.  He’s got a great intensity in his acting that could easily be adjusted to be a Christian Grey and from what I know of his character later in the series he can pull off the more romantic side too.  He’s also been in The Rules of Attraction and How to Make Love to a Woman – with titles like that he seems a shoe in.

Alex Pettyfer - Best know for being in Magic Mike, he’s done some other films too but nothing big.  When I saw Magic Mike and his name came up in the credits and I realized he was mentioned as a possible Christian I was instantly put off.  I just don’t see it in his acting skills or in his looks.

Colin Egglesfield - He was my original choice for Christian.  He’s done a lot of TV – All My Children, Rizzoli and Isles, Gilmore Girls, etc.  Jill watched him on All My Children and assures me he had to act many different “shades” with his character.  His film work includes Must Love Dogs and Something Borrowed.  It’s been a little while since I saw Something Borrowed, but I distinctly remember liking him when I shouldn’t – a good sign of his acting skills, particularly for a role like this.  But the last I heard he has admitted to not reading the books, though his mother has, he he.  Anyway, I have an issue with actors who haven’t read the books, especially at this point.  If you’re seriously interested you would have read the books at least once by now.

Matt Bomer - Best known for Magic Mike and White Collar, but he does have a lot of other experience in different mediums and different types of characters.  Unlike Alex Pettyfer when Matt Bomer’s name came up at the end of Magic Mike I thought, “yea he might work.” He also looks GREAT in a suit.  I’ve watched 2 episodes of White Collar and I can see why people like him.  He has a great low key intensity to him, his character has a lot of different sides to it.  I’m a fan.

Shia LaBeouf – Ok, I’ve looked at a bunch of pictures of him and only thought he was cute in one or two, the rest I either thought he was ugly in or he was too grungy to even be considered as a Christian Grey.  Sorry Shia.

Chris Hemsworth – I like Chris, really I do, and he’s hot as hell.  But he’s too rugged to play Christian.  I could see him as an Elliot though.

Tatum Channing – Um, yea, if he’ll only do it if his wife plays Ana then he’s not taking it seriously and neither am I.

Mark Wahlberg – Another one with wife issues.  I’ll watch you in another movie, thanks.

One thing I will note about anyone who is being considered for the role.  I think Team 50 is looking for someone discrete and wont go blabbing around about stuff.  Ian hasn’t gone overboard but he might have made too many comments and that could scare off Team Grey.  Also, I don’t believe anything anyone says: if they’re aware they are being considered and trying to prove they are discrete then they’re not going to say they’ve read the books and think they’re perfect for the role, if you know what I mean.

I know there are some other names in the running, like Alexander Skarsgard, Henry Cavill and Oliver Jackson-Cohen. I may cover them in another post, but I have to get back to my new addiction – The Vampire Diaries.

So who is my pick?  Either Ian Somerhalder or Matt Bomer, it kind of depends on my mood and what Christian we are talking about.
