Fifty Shades of Grey Back in Brevard County, Florida

USA Today reports that Fifty Shades of Grey will be coming back to the Brevard County Library!  I wasn’t sure this would happen, and this does seem to have come from a higher authority then the banning came from.  Sounds like your calls worked!  I like when the process works to fix its own errors.

Books should become available next week.

A Synopsis of the News

Everyday I read articles about Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s been interesting!  I do NOT post most of what I read, it’s either repetitive, boring, or just plain old bad writing.  Some articles I walk away from mad and insulted, others shaking my head, sometimes laughing.  But sometimes the comments are the most interesting.  I thought I would share some of the highlights of what I have read, purely off the top of my head.

Fifty shades of Grey is smut, porn, erotic, a love story, a manual on sex.  It teaches woman to be submissive and allow men to control them.  Stalking is ok.  Woman are dumb for reading this either because the writing is so bad or because the story is so bad.

Oh, and some have said it objectifies men too.  My head is spinning!

The writing makes Stephanie Meyer’s writing look good.  But ironically another article analyzed the writing and found it was an 89% copy of Twilight.

Feminists think we’re taking a step back – allowing a much older man take advantage of a young woman.  Gosh, my Dad is 7 years older then my mother, what does that say about my Mom?

HE has a Red Room of Pain, never mind that SHE named it that and he never thought of it that way.

Kim Kardashian can read, but has only flipped through the books.  I think this is important since Kim Kardashaian and Fifty Shades of Grey in one article will drive a lot of traffic to your site.

Ian Somerhalder has actually started reading the books and is still interested in playing Christian.  Nina Debrov hasn’t ruled out playing Ana, but doesn’t think she should be playing opposite Ian.  Ryan Seacrest is enjoying the books.  I wonder if he’ll find a way to get himself into the movies as a cameo role?

There has been an increase in the sales of silver balls and other sex toys.  Or you could just go to a Fifty Shades of Grey party/demonstration event.

Christian’s don’t think Christians should be reading the books, something about it being against the bible.  Of course the most ardent supporters of not reading it are the ones who haven’t read it.

Fifty Shades of Grey is about a sex slave.  Huh?

Libraries are confused.  Some are banning, others have long wait lists and are ordering more books.

Kristen Stewart heard about the books from Robert Pattinson, is interested in reading it, but isn’t admitting to reading it.  She’s also not commenting on playing Ana.

Some news outlets are posting so much about Fifty Shades of Grey that the readers are getting sick of it, and think they’re just trying to drive new traffic to their site.

A lot of time is spent trying to figure out why woman like the book – the sex, we’re feeling less repressed, we’re feeling empowered, escapism, we want to be controlled by men.  The reasons go on and on.  In the end, they’re all trying to figure out what makes us tick so they can figure out what the next big thing will be.

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

The Huffington Post has an article about the use of condoms and the access to affordable health care.  You’ll remember that Christian is very careful.

According to the Pocono Record, libraries in the poconos will be making Fifty Shades available to their readers.

If you missed E.L. James on The View.

If you want to borrow Fifty Shades from your library, get on the list fast, it might be a long wait!

Banning Books, in 2012?

We’re in the year 2012, right?  We live in a free country, right?  Sure you can buy Fifty Shades of Grey at most book stores.  But you may not be able to borrow it from your library.  Below are a few stories about the book banning, or in some cases the refusal to purchase.

Why libraries banning Fifty Shades of Grey is bad for the public if it’s what THEY want to read.

And of course the book banning/non-purchasing by libraries is extending past Florida, according to the Seattle Times.

According to Wikipedia public libraries are mandated to serve the public’s information needs.  Additionally, public libraries are funded by the public.  So when did we start to allow a bunch of prudish men and women decide what we can and can’t read?  We are talking about the New Times Best Selling novels, not some run of the mill book that no one knows about.

Middle class and rich woman in New York City and California can afford the book if they can’t get it at the library, they’re simply hampered by long waiting lists.  But for the lower classes, where putting food on the table is the priority, $30 makes a difference.  These are the people who should have this book available to them.  They are paying taxes that are funding their library and they should absolutely have a say in whether these books are available.

If your library refuses to make the books available, tell them you want the books.  Don’t be shy.  If no one speaks out then they’ll continue to forget who the library is there for!

50 Shades of Grey News and a Petition

USA Today ran a nice story about the overwhelming expereince that E.L. James is having on her book tour.  I think ti’s easy to want fame and fortune, until of course you have to deal with crazy 30 and 40 year old mothers.

A fun little review of the the Washington book signing.  Handcuffs, do you need special pen to do that?

Long Island’s Newsday wrote a review about the luncheon and book signing on Long Island yesterday.  No new news though if you’ve been following the book tour.

A Floridian has started a Change.org petition to get Fifty Shades of Grey back into the Brevard County Libraries.

50 Shades of Grey in the Media

Glamour ran a story about men reading 50 Shades of Grey, they seem to like the same things that woman do.

Florida’s Brevard County is pulling 50 Shades of Grey out of their library system, but don’t worry, they still have The Hot Box available.  I’m going to guess that’s not a book about ovens…

E.L. James talks about her research of the books.

E.L. James in People. Her red room of pain is actually pretty painful – it’s for ironing!  But she’s not commenting on the casting of the movie, be we are….

And I actually did enjoy the article put out my MTV News that quoted Mag’s and I.  We discussed the casting of Christian and Ana.  What we’re looking for, and why I might or might not like to see.  We would love to hear your comments!
