Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media – May 2013

Here’s a listing of what’s new in the Fifty Shades of Grey world for May of 2013.  I’m going to keep casting news on this post this month to keep my own brain organized. As always, whenever bigger or more interesting news comes out we will feature it with its own post.

  • I found a lovely drawing of a woman reading Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s a nice picture with a great setting.
  • IB Times is suggesting Minka Kelly for Anastasia? Haven’t seen her act, but the picture with it shows the right look.
  • Several media outlets are reporting that although the sale of physical books is down, the rise in the sale of e-books in 2012 is keeping the publishing industry afloat.  Of course, Fifty Shades of Grey has a lot to do with that. Thank you E L James!
  • The Rugby Observer is advertising a Fifty Shades of Grey Painting exhibit on May 4.  I have no idea where Rugby is, but I hope some fans from that area see this.
  • Stephen Amell went on Facebook and said he’s not interested in playing Christian Grey.  I guess it’s a good thing he finally read the books before too many people started to get attached. Screen Shot 2013-05-09 at 9.31.21 AM
  • Fifty Shades of Grey is moving up on the pirated books list in China. With the censorship laws in China you can’t get it legally so it’s being pirated. That’s the kind of pirating I like.

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media – March 2013

Here’s the running tab of Fifty Shades of Grey in the media for March of 2013:

  • SPANK will be in New Orleans, Chicago, Upper Darby – PA, Columbus – OH, and Kansas City. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
  • Matt Bomer has revealed his favorite places in New York City.  Ok, it’s not exactly Fifty Shades related, but we’re in NYC so we thought it was cool.
  • The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Smash Pictures is countersuing Universal for their lawsuit, claiming copyright infringement of Fifty Shades of Grey.  Smash is claiming that the story is public domain.  I’m not lawyer, but I’m thinking that E L James owns her own work.
  • Lovehoney has announced the release of the Fifty Shades of Grey Pleasure Collection in the United States for April 8.
  • The Hollywood Reporter reports that Anonymous reports that they found a document in a German Studio attaching Emma Watson to the Fifty Shades of Grey film.  The studio says the document is outdated, proof that it existed. But there is no indication that this was even a serious document, particularly since the company is linked with Summit Entertainment, not a Universal subsidiary.
  • The Hollywood Reporter is reporting a deal was settled between Smash Pictures and Universal in regards to the XXX adaptation.  Smash is paying an undisclosed amount and cannot distribute the film anymore.
  • Kate Moss has read Fifty Shades of Grey for charity, watch on Youtube.
  • The Washington Post reports that Fifty Shades of Grey has been on their bestseller list for 50 weeks.  What a lovely number.
  • The Escala penthouse has been sold, the owners are not named Grey.
  • Random House has sold 70 MILLION copies of the Fifty Shades of Grey series. Operating earnings for Random House increased 76% last year. Random House thanks Fifty Shades of Grey and a few other books for their overall sucess last year.
  • Marketwire reports that the Fifty Shades of Grey Official Pleasure Collection is coming to Canada, I know a lot of Canadian’s are pleased with PinkCherry for bring this to them.

E L James’ new Journal to be published – Updated

As I was perusing the news this morning, I saw that E L James has a new book coming out.  Many media outlets are reporting it is a writing book or guide.

However, on Twitter she is stating it’s a journal.

Journal

It’s actually a journal with excerpts from the books, her musical play list and room for aspiring writers to take their own notes.  It sounds like something that will be interesting to both aspiring writers and Fifty Shades of Grey fans.

Good luck to Erika with her new journal.

UPDATE – The Journal is available for pre-order on Amazon (and I’m assuming other sellers, but I saw it on Amazon first).

Here is the Press Release:

“I have always maintained that the best person to write for is yourself–and what better place to start than in a journal.”  –E L James

New York (3/11/13):  Inspired by E L James’ #1 Bestselling trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey, Vintage Books will release FIFTY SHADES OF GREY:  Inner Goddess (A Journal) this May.  Developed as a creative collaboration between EL James and her US publisher, the bonded-leather soft cover journal will offer readers and aspiring writers a place where they can record their innermost thoughts. The FIFTY SHADES OF GREY: Inner Goddess (A Journal) will be in stores by May 1, 2013, in time for Mother’s Day, with a first printing of 125,000 copies.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY: Inner Goddess (A Journal) includes a foreword by E L James, excerpts from her FIFTY SHADES novels, writing tips, a writing playlist, and fully-lined pages for readers to express their own “inner goddess.”  The journal pages are divided into sections inspired by her protagonists, Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.

“As E L James traveled and met with her readers, there was a great curiosity about how she got started writing,” said Vintage/Anchor’s Anne Messitte, the acquiring publisher of the Fifty Shades series. “Her personal story as a writer is inspirational to many women, and journaling has been an important part of her creative process from the start.”

Fifty Shades to The Rescue!

EL James’s Fifty Shades Trilogy has not only been credited with saving many a tepid, ice cold, sexless marriage, but now is being credited with saving an entire town!

What is that you’re saying? How can this be? Well, let me tell you a little story…

The town of Millinocket, Maine is home to the Great Northern Paper Company.  What began as a solid paper mill, Great Northern Paper company had to downsize in the later 90s due to publishing companies outsourcing their paper needs to other countries. GNP lost a lot of business and had to close many of their plants, and lay off hundreds of workers, including 400 workers in the small town of East Millinocket.

Here’s where Fifty Shades comes to the rescue… Cate Street Capital bought the GNP plant in East Millinocket and quickly signed a deal to produce 3,000 tons of paper that were needed to print E.L. James’ novel: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. Business has never been better for GNP and they have even opened up their mills again!

So there you, Fifty Shades of Grey saves towns, lives and creates jobs!  Thanks EL!

Fifty Shades of Grey In The Media

The New York Times has a video about the impact of Fifty Shades of Grey.  From the opening up of the Romance book industry, the growth of self publishing, and the publishers trying to find the next big hit.

People magazine (and others) are reporting that The Heathman now has a Fifty Shades of Gin drink:
1 oz. gin (recipe suggests Nolet’s Gin)
3/4 oz. rhubarb puree* (Heathman restaurant pastry chef John Gayer creates his own)
3/4 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz. simple syrup
Cranberry bitters
Cava/Orosecco
Lime wheel garnish
Directions: In a shaker, combine rhubarb puree, lime juice, simple syrup and gin. Add ice and shake well. Rinse a martini glass with cranberry bitters. Strain cocktail into glass and top with sparkling wine, either Cava or Prosecco. Garnish with lime wheel or twist.
If only I liked gin more.

Several media sources are reporting that “Woman In Need,” a British charity, is calling for a Fifty Shades of Grey book burning on November 5.  The book is called vile and dreadful.  What strikes me about this is that someone who doesn’t understand the books wants to have a public event to put down the books, but in the end are just giving it more press and notoriety.

Book Publishers Hunt Online for the New EL James…

According to a new online article the 50 shades trilogy is changing the book publishing game (or so it seems).  Publishers are starting to move in on the profits generated by the thriving online platforms that serve unpublished writers.  What do you think? Does the success of this trilogy make it easier for any Tom, Dick or Harriette to become a published author?  Are any of you in the process of writing an ebook and trying to get it published?…

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

Mama Luvs Books is having a raffle for a copy of the boxed set of Fifty Shades of Grey, I believe it ends Friday.

Infinite reads is doing a chapter by chapter of Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s quite negative, but I thought I would throw it out there.  The link is to the post on Chapter 13, the date at The Heathman.

From Forbes, it took the publishers ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ to finally realize the impact of the ebook market.

The Ten Million Mark!

Random House is reporting that the trilogy has sold 10 million copies in the United States!  This includes physical books, audio and ebooks.

It has also taken over 25% of the adult fiction market.

This is just US numbers, the books are available in 37 countries.  The book will be available in Spanish on June 5 from Barnes and Noble as Cincuenta sombras de Grey.

So keep reading ladies!

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

From the New York Times I have an article about the passing of Mike McGrady.  Mike and a few other journalists wrote Naked Came the Stranger in 1969 as a Hoax and it became a best seller.  It’s interesting to see some of the parallels between Fifty Shades and Naked Came the Stranger.

There are now sex parties themed around Fifty Shades.  Thank you Huffington Post!

Thank you Hollywood Life for making me laugh.  Actually I guess it’s EL James’ son that made me laugh in this one.

A poor Massachusetts woman has had her copies of Fifty Shades of Grey stolen.  This is a cruel world!

50 Shades of Grey in the News

1,000 people show up in New Haven to hear E.L. James speak.  Wow, that’s a lot of people, but I’m not surprised.

A fun theory on why 50 Shades of Grey has become so popular; hint, it involves Twilight.

How the publishing world is changing, and how 50 Shades of Grey is involved, from The Economist.

Video from MYFOX Philly about the book signing last night in Rittenhouse Square.

I’m not sure where to start with the list of people who might be offended by this article from Modesto Bee, but be warned it’s written by a feminist.  I’m a single 30 something woman who is all about having my own identity but I’m able to distiguish between fantasy and reality and I find it a bit insulting when it’s said that by enjoying a fantasy novel I’m not able to.

I’ve been trying to post some positive and negative news articles, some of the negative I can’t help but give a bit of my own commentary on.  If you have a different opinion please comment on the page.  I’m open to other opinions, even if I disagree.
