There’s Going To Be A Lot of Sex In the Film

It seems Kelly Marcel has done an interview and is quoted all over the place in an article by The Telegraph.  It’s a very interesting interview that gives some insight into what Team 50 has planned for the film and I think you’ll all like it!

Here are a few exerpts:

“Regardless of what you may think of the writing, this is a modern love story, involving two complex characters, and that’s what I’m interested in,” she told Style magazine.

“Well, there is going to be a lot of sex in the film,” she said. “It will be NC-17 [the equivalent of a British 18 certificate]. It’s going to be raunchy.

“We did go through and decide which are our favourites and which are not. Most of them are in there, but I can’t say more than that.”

Wow, this is exactly what I’ve been hoping for, she likes the characters and the sex. Because without Christian and Ana’s love story it would be porn/erotica, but with them, it’s so much more.  Ok, I’m giddy with excitement now.

UPDATE:  Over Twitter Kelly Marcel has said that she did not use the word “raunchy.” I’m glad to hear that, it didn’t seem to fit in with the rest of what she was saying. She also did not say it would be an NC-17 rating.

Safe, Sane and Consensual?

I while back I wrote a post about why I didn’t think teens should read Fifty Shades of Grey.  I thought, and still think that there are some girls who will get the wrong impression about relationships and sex from this series.  I do agree that many can and do read it and just enjoy the story and don’t get caught up in what can seem to be conflicting messages in the books.  At the time I couldn’t quite put my finger on the exact issue, but could sense it, particularly for those who did not finish the series and see the relationship between Ana and Christian fleshed out.

I was just reading an article about violence in the BDSM community with a focus on college students.  The article talks about how girls are becoming interested in BDSM and starting to experiment, no problem there. But, a lot of woman are finding themselves the victim of sexual assaults in the course of their experimentation.  To further complicate the issue, it’s being done under the guise of BDSM where the line of “Safe, Sane and Consensual” may not be as clear to the less experienced.

I have not delved into the world of BDSM, but seem to find myself reading quite a bit about it these days, research purposes of course.  But I’m seeing two issues.

First, younger, less experience woman don’t know their boundaries.  In theory this shouldn’t be a problem, but the nature of BDSM seems to be pushing your boundaries.  If you don’t know your boundaries how do you (or your Dom/sub) know how to push them?  When you’re in a relationship this might be easier to build to, but if you’re just going to a party and meet a cute Dom, I could see how this could quickly go wrong.

The other issue is the nature of pushing boundaries.  Between Christian and Ana, you can see that Christian is clearing trying to find (and push) Ana’s boundaries and is very adamant about her understanding and using a safe word.  In Darker he really takes a step back when he realizes she’s not “reliable” about using a safe word.  Just like Ana, I think some of these girls who are new to the community don’t know what is normal for them or what is normal for the BDSM community and findout out that was their limit was too late.  If a Dom is trying something on you and you’re not comfortable with; but, think it’s a normal interaction, then they’re probably less likely to safe world and then end up being abused.

What’s the answer?  Well it’s not that Fifty Shades of Grey should be censured.  The answer really lies within the BDSM community and with the people playing in it.  But it does emphasis the point that anyone entering the community, particularly those with less sexual experience, really need to be careful about communicating what they are and are not comfortable with and then feel the freedom to safe word when their limit is pushed to far.

Bared To You Book Review

With all the comparisons of Bared To You and Fifty Shades of Grey I decided it was time for me to actually read Bared To You by Sylvia Day.  Knowing the books had been compared a lot I went in thinking it would be like Fifty Shades of Grey and while there are some points that are similar, the books are quite different. I have to admit that it messed with my head a bit when I was reading Bared to You.

The main characters are Eva and Gideon, they each have issues and lots of them.  They actually make Ana and Christian seem like normal stable characters.  As private as Christian is in Fifty Shades of Grey, Gideon is at times the complete opposite, at least with his public life.  As for Ana and Eva, I think they only thing they have in common is a divorced mother and that they both went to college.  Otherwise, they have completely different life experiences which leads to very different interactions with Christian and Gideon.

Both books have a lot of sexual tension and the sex to go with it.  But it has a different tone in Bared to You and I found the writing of the sex scenes better in Fifty Shades of Grey.  I think the sex is a bit less important in Bared to You then it seemed in Fifty Shades, at least in its role as a plot point.

I enjoyed Bared to You and if you’re a fan of Fifty Shades of Grey you’ll probably also enjoy Bared to You.  But I think it’s important to read it as an independent book with no relationship to Fifty Shades of Grey.  And if you’re not wowed by Bared to You after you read it you should still read Reflected in You, it was a lot better, very intense!

SEX!! Did 50 Shades Trilogy Really Inspire You to Get Into BDSM?

So, I told Crissy that my post today would be slightly inappropriate and possibly take us to the next level…

While many, many parts of the books were WILDLY entertaining and  mind bending (the R8 scene was crazy!), I don’t know if they inspire me to delve into the BDSM scene.  I must admit that my knowledge of the scene is severely lacking. I am basing these thoughts entirely on what E.L James’ perception and portrayal of the BDSM Dom/sub relationship is in the book. I cant say that I see myself ever being a Dom or sub.

What do you think? Have these books made you want to delve into the BDSM scene? Or, if you find yourself in the scene after reading these books, could it be that you were always interested, and all the hype surrounding these books just made it a little more acceptable to take the leap?

Stay tuned as I continue to do more research into the BDSM scene and all it entails.

A Synopsis of the News

Everyday I read articles about Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s been interesting!  I do NOT post most of what I read, it’s either repetitive, boring, or just plain old bad writing.  Some articles I walk away from mad and insulted, others shaking my head, sometimes laughing.  But sometimes the comments are the most interesting.  I thought I would share some of the highlights of what I have read, purely off the top of my head.

Fifty shades of Grey is smut, porn, erotic, a love story, a manual on sex.  It teaches woman to be submissive and allow men to control them.  Stalking is ok.  Woman are dumb for reading this either because the writing is so bad or because the story is so bad.

Oh, and some have said it objectifies men too.  My head is spinning!

The writing makes Stephanie Meyer’s writing look good.  But ironically another article analyzed the writing and found it was an 89% copy of Twilight.

Feminists think we’re taking a step back – allowing a much older man take advantage of a young woman.  Gosh, my Dad is 7 years older then my mother, what does that say about my Mom?

HE has a Red Room of Pain, never mind that SHE named it that and he never thought of it that way.

Kim Kardashian can read, but has only flipped through the books.  I think this is important since Kim Kardashaian and Fifty Shades of Grey in one article will drive a lot of traffic to your site.

Ian Somerhalder has actually started reading the books and is still interested in playing Christian.  Nina Debrov hasn’t ruled out playing Ana, but doesn’t think she should be playing opposite Ian.  Ryan Seacrest is enjoying the books.  I wonder if he’ll find a way to get himself into the movies as a cameo role?

There has been an increase in the sales of silver balls and other sex toys.  Or you could just go to a Fifty Shades of Grey party/demonstration event.

Christian’s don’t think Christians should be reading the books, something about it being against the bible.  Of course the most ardent supporters of not reading it are the ones who haven’t read it.

Fifty Shades of Grey is about a sex slave.  Huh?

Libraries are confused.  Some are banning, others have long wait lists and are ordering more books.

Kristen Stewart heard about the books from Robert Pattinson, is interested in reading it, but isn’t admitting to reading it.  She’s also not commenting on playing Ana.

Some news outlets are posting so much about Fifty Shades of Grey that the readers are getting sick of it, and think they’re just trying to drive new traffic to their site.

A lot of time is spent trying to figure out why woman like the book – the sex, we’re feeling less repressed, we’re feeling empowered, escapism, we want to be controlled by men.  The reasons go on and on.  In the end, they’re all trying to figure out what makes us tick so they can figure out what the next big thing will be.

50 Shades of Grey in the news

Want to know about how 50 Shades of Grey is pushing erotica to the bestsellers lists?  I’m working on a post about this for tomorrow.

Another article, from Patch.com, with a negative review of 50 Shades of Grey, thought the author did count the number of times certain things were said, and that’s kinda fun.  It’s obvious the author read PARTS of the book, but it’s also obvious she didn’t pay much attention to detail.   I have no issue with a negative review, but if you’re going to do that, you should probably get your details right.

Just to balance things out, here’s an article where the author read the book, did her research and understood what the book is, a romance with lots of sex.  It’s the kind of article I would refer someone to if they wanted a little more information before deciding if they should read it.
