A Movie With A View

As I was flying back from vacation a couple off days ago the airline was showing Breaking Dawn Part Two.  A great end to a an even greater trip, I sat back with a drink and enjoyed the movie.

The last scene in the movie is Bella and Edward in the field of flowers when Bella uses her power to allow Edward finally see into her mind and her memories of her relationship with him.  It’s one of my favorite moments in the series, when Edward finally is able to see how much Bella has loved him since the very beginning.

It got me thinking about Fifty Shades.  I’d love to see Christian’s viewpoint throughout parts of the movie, the first time he laid eyes on Ana, her graduation, their first date, even Ana’s rejection.

What would you like to see from Christian’s viewpoint?

Meet: Color Me Greysessed!

For our newest Fifty Shades of Grey Community Interview we decided to interview Michele from Color Me Greysessed who we had the pleasure of meeting at the Katie Couric show.

How did you come to read Fifty Shades? I was watching the Today Show, and they did a piece on the books. They talked about how they were all the rage with women. I was intrigued and downloaded them immediately.

Did you read them on a book or ebook? I downloaded them to my iPad, but since then have bought all 3 books as well!

What’s your favorite book in the series? My favorite is definitely the first book. I just love a book with sexual tension, and EL definitely delivers that!

My favorite scene in the book: Well, there’s a few. But one that always sticks out is the “fuck the paperwork” scene. I didn’t see it coming, and those words were just hot! And I love the emails throughout the series! I think they are intimate, hilarious, and such a unique element to the books.

Outside of Fifty Shades of Grey, what is your favorite book or series? I was/am a huge Twilight fan. That was another series that I read multiple times. I have also been to Forks/Seattle/Lapush to visit all the places from both book series. Right now I am loving Alice Clayton’s work. Her books are such a fun read and she’s got a great flair for comedy. Before Fifty Shades, I hadn’t read much “kink.” I loved the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series, and I also love a good thriller. But as of late, it’s been a lot of kinky reading for me ;)

How many times have you read the series? I have read the series 5 times and now get bits and pieces of reading as I refer to the books often for my blog. The first time around I read all three books in 2 days. I willingly lose sleep when I get into a book. I am not good at delayed gratification! I need to know how it ends asap!

Who would you like to see play Christian and Anastasia in the movie? Well, anyone that follows me on Twitter, knows from my twitter handle that I am a huge Christian Bale fan. And I can now come to terms that he is never going to be cast. Yes, he is too old but in terms of acting ability-he’d be perfect! I don’t envy Team Fifty when it comes to casting. Looks are important but whoever they cast has to be able to bring it to the Red Room. Christian Grey is a complex character, so just a pretty face isn’t going to fill those ripped jeans! I can’ t specifically say who else besides The Dark Knight that I’d like to see as Christian. I have a few I wouldn’t mind seeing but keeping hush…too many friends with too many opinions;)

If I could ask EL two questions what would they be? I have had the pleasure of meeting E L twice this year! Once in Maryland for a book signing and again at the Katie Show this past fall. Both times I gave her my Fifty Shades-inspired cupcakes and got to make small talk with her. But if I had actual time to sit and talk with her, I’d ask which character in the book represents her. She has hinted at that and would love to know the answer! The other question I would ask is if I could be an assistant on the set of the movie. Why not, right? I think having a super fan on the set is a great way for instant feedback from the fans. Yes, a far-fetched question but I am a “go big or go home” kinda gal!

When did you start your blog? I started Color Me Greysessed this past summer. Someone suggested that I start one to talk about the numerous book related trips I have taken. And that indeed is how it began. The first few posts talk about the many adventures that I have been on with my BFF Kelly. Again with my “go big or go home” mentality, why just love the books when you can live out the books? We have traveled to Forks twice, LaPush, Oregon (where Twilight was actually filmed) and to our beloved Seattle where yes, I have kissed the Escala. Since starting the blog, it has definitely evolved into something “different”. I never intended on turning my blog into a series of kinky stories, mirrored in the writing of E L James, but it has. Months ago I did an online poll where you voted for your Christian, Ana, place to have sex, etc. The winners of the poll then got put into a story written by me. From that point on, I realized that I loved writing stories about Fifty Shades. Like so many of us, I was having Fifty Shades withdrawal. These stories help fill the void until the movie comes out. But reader beware: they are very kinky!

What are my goals for your webpage? Never did I think that my blog would be what it is today. I have loyal readers and a growing number of people who have signed up to receive it through email. I have been blessed with meeting wonderful people because of the blog and through Twitter. Aside from meeting Ms. James, I have also met Dana Brunetti, the producer of the movies and of course the Laters Baby women! My hopes are that although E L probably has not read my blog, that it would be considered one that shows my utmost respect for her and her work. I try to keep in line with the characters she created, and the format of her books. Because of these books, I have found a love of writing and a renewed love for reading.

Thank you Michele!

And for those of you who aren’t regular readers of Color Me Greysessed, I would like to suggest the 12 Days of Kinkmas.

Fifty Shades of Grey in the Media

Congratulations to E L James for winning another award!  Fifty Shades of Grey was chosen for the popular fiction book of the year in the National Book Awards, “the Oscars of the literary world.” The public can also vote for their favorite book of the year from their award winning list.

Well now they’ve done a study on it, it’s official, they jumped the gun when they classified Fifty Shades of Grey as “Mommy Porn.”  Really, they needed a study on this?  Yes, and the Weissman Report reports that 20% of readers are male and 15% of readers are over age 55.  What I think is most interesting is that this is from data between January and June.  I suspect that readership probably expanded more into the male, single, or “older” woman groups the longer the book has been out.

I like this article in The Guardian, nothing earth shattering in it, but it does reinforce what we know about Erika.  That’s she’s just a down to earth woman, not too different then the rest of us.  She’s also working on writing a book, not from Christian’s POV.

As most of you know by now, Erika has been in LA on a working trip.  Apparently she met with Jack Morrissey, who is Jack Morrissey you ask?  Well, he’s a Producer, but he also happens to be the partner of Bill Condon.  Bill Condon directed Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Dreamgirls and The Big C.  It could be coincidence since Erika is a big Twilight fan.  The script hasn’t been written yet, which leads me to believe their wont be a director announcement for a bit.  But, it doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun speculating.

Twilight Fan Fiction Gone Wild

Simon and Schuster has announced a new book series, The Office series with Beautiful Bastard and Beautiful Stranger.  It’s another series of Twilight Fan Fiction and it’s far from being the first Twilight Fan Fic to be published by a major publisher.  And it was also announced right before the final installment of the Twilight movies, Breaking Dawn Part 2, comes out in theatres.

This is obviously part of the continued attempt to find the next big thing.  If one series of Twilight Fan Fic made it big then others will do well to.  I’m sure the book will sell, just as others have.  But, I think this shows a bit of the lack of understanding of publishers of the phenomenon.

Fifty Shades of Grey started as a word of mouth phenomenon when it was still Fan Fic and continued to grow when it transitioned to Fifty Shades of Grey.  But at some point in that transition the fact that it was Fan Fic took the back burner.  I heard about it from my sister in March, who heard about it from her friends – no one knew it was Fan Fic until I told them.

While the Fan Fic aspect is what got Fifty Shades of Grey going initially, I’ve had enough conversations with fans to know that it’s not the reason for the phenomenon it became.  There is simply an infectious quality to the books that no amount of marketing can match.  Whether its the descriptions in the book or that bazaar feeling that you want these two unlikely characters to work it out, the reason for the phenomenon is not because it’s Twilight Fan Fic.  While I’m glad Fifty Shades of Grey has opened up publishers to look at different sources of literature, I think they’re still working within the box, it’s just a larger box then before.  It’s time the publishers started working outside the box too.

The Power of a Book Series

While keeping up to date on Fifty Shades of Grey I’ve noticed a couple news articles about how trilogies are very popular, think The Hunger Games.  The thought is that with a trilogy, because the characters get so much more developed, we can fall that much more in love with them.  I think this is particularly true with Fifty Shades of Grey.

In the past year I’ve had a bit of an obsession with book series, I’ve read The Hunger Games Trilogy, Twilight, and Harry Potter.  I read the first two books of The Hunger Games twice and the whole Twilight series twice.  If I had time I would be re-reading Harry Potter too.  But, I’m busy with Fifty Shades of Grey and working on my long list of books to read.

I remember reading Judith McNaught books in high school, I remember being so excited when she would bring in characters from previous books for guest appearances.  I was more excited about them then about the characters in the current book!  I should have known to look for series books then.

I have read a few other series books, Alex Cross series by James Patterson, but I stopped reading them. There is a fatigue point in series books (or maybe I just don’t love crime books), I found myself wondering how many times the guy could almost die and be saved.  Or, how many outlandish crimes could happen in DC and only be solved by him. Though I was always interested to see what would happen in his personal life, what woman he would be with and what happens to the kids.

But back to Fifty Shades of Grey, people wonder why we love Christian so much.  This is usually wondered by someone who didn’t read the books, or only read the first book and didn’t “get it” and didn’t continue on with the series.  That’s ok, but anyone who has read the series knows that Christian in Fifty Shades of Grey isn’t overly redeeming.  His redemption comes in Fifty Shades Darker and there is no turning back.  It’s love at second book.  And now we all want to delve into his mind even more with books from his perspective.

Has anyone else fallen in love with other series of books?  What is your sweet spot for the number of books in a series?  I think 3 or 4 is a good number, enough time to develop the characters but still leave you wanting more.

Taming the Wild

A couple weeks ago I was in Montana at a Wolf and Bear rescue center.  Our guide was showing us the wolves, and although they didn’t look anything like the wolves in Twilight, I did find myself thinking of Twilight.  With my head already in the literary world our guide mentioned that there are people who have wolves as pets.  I think they’re crazy, but then I can barely manage to care for a fish.

Someone from my group asked why people would want to have a wolf since they’re not entirely trainable.  They will always want to be the alpha, not really a safe arrangement when both parties think they’re the alpha.  The response of my guide got me thinking of Christian.  She said that some people have a need to tame the wild.  Tame something that doesn’t want to be, and maybe shouldn’t be tamed.

A lot of articles about Fifty Shades of Grey mention that the book is going to make woman want to save damaged men, the fifty shades of fucked up men out there.  Although we all love Christian and his fifty shades of fuckedupness, I think the vast majority of us know that in real life he wouldn’t change like that or as fast, if ever.  I’m sure there are people out there who do think that men like Christian can be saved, I don’t think it has anything to do with the books, just as there are people who think they can raise a wolf as a pet.

The reality is that a lot of people there is an urge to tame something, wolves, fucked up men/woman.  I think that there is an element of human nature where we want to prove the world wrong or do something extreme, it has a payoff in making you feel powerful and successful.  Of course sometimes it doesn’t work out and so we have medical doctors and psychiatrists.

EL James Q&A

The Independent has an article about EL James’ event on July 3 at the Institute of Engineering and Technology.  It was a 2 Hour Q&A session.  Much of what was said has been said before, but there are a few new things!

Another article on her Q&A from the London Evening Standard.

I’m not going to point to any articles, but there are a few with headlines that there may be a copyright issue with Fifty Shades becoming a movie, the articles go on to say a lawyer says if there was an issue it would have come out already.  In my non-expert opinion I agree.

The cast of Snow White and the Huntsman read Fifty Shades of Grey

Oh, MTV, you have done it, you have gotten Kristen Stewart to read Fifty Shades of Grey!

I still don’t want Kristen Stewart or the Twilight cast doing Fifty Shades of Grey, but it was good to see Kristen Stewart finally reading the book.  It is kinda about her after all.

Chris Hemsworth was a bit too shy, I think we can cross him off the list now.  Besides, he’s a bit to rugged for Christian Grey.

But I truly enjoyed Charlize Theron’s reading.  More and more I’m thinking she could be a great Mrs. Robinson.  She’s 36 going on 37 and although I picture Mrs. Robinson a bit older, it can totally be done.  If anyone has seen her in Monster knows she can act her ass off and be old, ugly and haggard.  In Monster Charlize Theron played a skanky, butch, run down serial killer.  She could so be a Dom! The only problem, it’s a small role and Mrs. Robinson isn’t even seen in the first book, but that could be fixed with a good screen writer.

Sam Claflin does do sexy, and he does bite his lip.  How about he play Anastasia.  Or maybe Elliot?

Thank you everyone who posted about this in the comments, I did see it Monday afternoon and posted it on Twitter.  But it takes a little longer to get these things up on the site if I want to make semi intelligent comments.

A Synopsis of the News

Everyday I read articles about Fifty Shades of Grey, it’s been interesting!  I do NOT post most of what I read, it’s either repetitive, boring, or just plain old bad writing.  Some articles I walk away from mad and insulted, others shaking my head, sometimes laughing.  But sometimes the comments are the most interesting.  I thought I would share some of the highlights of what I have read, purely off the top of my head.

Fifty shades of Grey is smut, porn, erotic, a love story, a manual on sex.  It teaches woman to be submissive and allow men to control them.  Stalking is ok.  Woman are dumb for reading this either because the writing is so bad or because the story is so bad.

Oh, and some have said it objectifies men too.  My head is spinning!

The writing makes Stephanie Meyer’s writing look good.  But ironically another article analyzed the writing and found it was an 89% copy of Twilight.

Feminists think we’re taking a step back – allowing a much older man take advantage of a young woman.  Gosh, my Dad is 7 years older then my mother, what does that say about my Mom?

HE has a Red Room of Pain, never mind that SHE named it that and he never thought of it that way.

Kim Kardashian can read, but has only flipped through the books.  I think this is important since Kim Kardashaian and Fifty Shades of Grey in one article will drive a lot of traffic to your site.

Ian Somerhalder has actually started reading the books and is still interested in playing Christian.  Nina Debrov hasn’t ruled out playing Ana, but doesn’t think she should be playing opposite Ian.  Ryan Seacrest is enjoying the books.  I wonder if he’ll find a way to get himself into the movies as a cameo role?

There has been an increase in the sales of silver balls and other sex toys.  Or you could just go to a Fifty Shades of Grey party/demonstration event.

Christian’s don’t think Christians should be reading the books, something about it being against the bible.  Of course the most ardent supporters of not reading it are the ones who haven’t read it.

Fifty Shades of Grey is about a sex slave.  Huh?

Libraries are confused.  Some are banning, others have long wait lists and are ordering more books.

Kristen Stewart heard about the books from Robert Pattinson, is interested in reading it, but isn’t admitting to reading it.  She’s also not commenting on playing Ana.

Some news outlets are posting so much about Fifty Shades of Grey that the readers are getting sick of it, and think they’re just trying to drive new traffic to their site.

A lot of time is spent trying to figure out why woman like the book – the sex, we’re feeling less repressed, we’re feeling empowered, escapism, we want to be controlled by men.  The reasons go on and on.  In the end, they’re all trying to figure out what makes us tick so they can figure out what the next big thing will be.

Casting for Anastasia Steele

Mags has been quoted in an MTV article about the casting of Anastasia Steele.  She would like to see Lily Collins.

I know a lot of names have been thrown around who are actresses who are playing along side actors who are being considered for the role of Christian.  I don’t want to see Fifty Shades of Grey turn into Vampire Diaries the movie or Twilight for adults.

Who would you like to see?
