About a week ago I did a little stalking of IMDB and found out who the casting director and Cinematographer are going to be for Fifty Shades of Grey The Movie. I learned my stalking from Christian so I didn’t stop there.
The new information no IMDB is that it lists Jennifer Ehle as Carla. This has not been officially announced and anyone with an IMDB Pro account can add this information, so as far as I’m concerned the contract hasn’t been signed, though it could well be true.
But we now have a Laurel Bergman for Art Direction. What has Laurel done you ask? Well Fifty Shades of Grey is only her 9th job as Art Director her other work includes: The Zero Sum and The Suspect. However, she has worked on in the Art Department for some bigger films: 2012, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, and Night At the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Update – Michael Diner has also been added for Art Direction. You may have seen his work in: The Cabin in the Woods, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The A Team, Night At the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and a movie I love – Juno. Michael and Laurel have worked together on some films, hopefully making them a good team. He also worked with Sandy Walker on X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
What does an Art Director do? I didn’t know either so I went to old faithful – Wikipedia, here is what they said:
An Art Director, in the hierarchical structure of a film art department, works directly below the [production designer], in collaboration with the Set Decorator, and above the set designers. A large part of their duties include the administrative aspects of the art department. They are responsible for assigning tasks to personnel such as the Art Department Coordinator, and the Construction Coordinator, keeping track of the art department budget and scheduling (i.e. Prep/Wrap Schedule) as well as overall quality control. They are often also a liaison to other departments; especially Construction, Special FX, Property, Transportation (graphics), and Locations Departments. The Art Director also attends all production meetings and tech scouts in order to provide information to the set designers in preparation for all departments to have a visual floor plan of each location visited.
Sandy Walker will be doing Set Direction. Looks like it wont be her first time working with Laurel as they both worked on 2012, and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. She’s also worked on my favorite movie: Miracle. Yea! She was an assistant set director on a lot of big films and has moved on the working as a Set Director. Her biggest project was probably X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Update – In the Art Department we have Ray Lai as an illustrator. Ray has done a lot of film and TV work as an illustrator. After looking at the list of films, he’s obviously worked with Sandy, Michael and Laurel A LOT.
In the position of concept artist we have Milena Zdravkovic. Milena is also no rookie to the art department. She’s worked with this same team quite a few times. But the movie that jumped out at me and I know was popular with Henry Cavill fans – Man of Steel.
If you’re wondering why I trust the production team, but not the casting on IMDB? Because there isn’t going to be a press release for them, but there will be some sort of announcement for casting. But don’t worry, I’ll continue stalking and keep you up to date.
