I really, really tried to ignore the stupid comments that people wrote during the #ASKELJames events. None of it was anything I hadn’t seen before, much of it is the same recycled comments she gets EVERY SINGLE DAY.
But one of the worst parts is that the media promoted the trolls and the bullies. There are some stupid people out there, many of which were just repeating some other stupid tweet they saw and added the hashtag, whatever, there’s not much I can do for stupid people. But the media, the same publications that will write a glowing article one day about the series, or publish whole magazines dedicated to the series in the hopes of selling magazines and making money, today they posted nasty articles for the same purpose. Except, they’re posting tweets that have no purpose except to be mean and spiteful. Some of them are long time trolls and bullies.
First of all, they media is only adding to the gang mentality that it’s ok to bash someone – yes media outlets – you are contributing to the bullying of an individual – the same thing that next week you’ll write an article about how we shouldn’t bully others. You’re promoting people who sit behind a computer and write nasty stuff.
Are there some funny tweets? sure. A couple legitimate complaints? sure. But even many of those were written with a nasty gang mentality, adding to the fever.
To those who spent their day coming up with creative ways to write nasty comments in #ASKELJames, I say, find a hobby that makes you grow as a person, that enriches you and society. You’ll get more long term enjoyment out of life if you’re doing something positive.
To the media I say, do your homework! It’s a sad day in American history when a British reporter is the one who is uncovering corruption in the US Government, meanwhile you’re copying a bunch of tweets from bullies and trolls. Many of them have been around for a long time, you just never looked long enough to notice.
As for the hashtag failing – you’re wrong. EL James gets this everyday, I have no doubt she and her team expected this. But, she still did what she wanted to do – she answered the questions of her fans. While you write about this failure, know that she answered mine and many other people’s questions, just like she does on a regular basis. She’s on twitter for us, in spite of the bullies and trolls and that makes us love her even more.
