A well furnished or decorated room, apartment or house can mean the difference between a peaceful or chaotic mind and life. The same can be said for a movie set. The furniture and decoration can give us an insight into the mindset of a character. None more so than Fifty Shades of Grey. From the eclectic and feminine touches of Ana’s apartment to Christian’s high end and sometimes vivid, but somewhat untouchable sterile living space, we can take a glimpse inside their heads.
This is the first in a series of posts that I’m writing about the furniture that was used in Christian Grey’s apartment. Back in May I went to a furniture conference where a few of the furniture companies were featuring their lines, including several items from Fifty Shades of Grey. I want to thank Lisa from Fifty Shades Girl Portland for tipping me off!
The four companies that I met with and will be covering are BRABBU, Koket, Boca de Lobo and Delight, they are all sisters companies. From what I was told Universal approached one company and referred them to the other 3 companies. The original plan was to rent the furniture; however, due to the delays in filming Universal had to purchase the furniture. It should all be safely stored in a studio in Vancouver.
When researching the furniture I noticed that the description of BRABBU and the company mission makes it the perfect company to furnish Christian’s apartment, here are a few tidbits from their website that demonstrate how well matched they are with Christian.
BRABBU is a design brand that reflects an intense way of living, bringing fierceness, strength and power into an urban lifestyle.
BRABBU only settles for the best.
BRABBU is the nature’s child. In every design piece we reinvent all the forces of nature through design, using the materials, textures, scents, flavours and colours that live inside the nature and inside the urban life. BRABBU loves the unknown, the adventure and the challenge. Our strong inspiration on nature makes BRABBU an attitude, a powerfull way of living.
BRABBU designs and produces pieces with fierceness and a strong dedication. We believe in the strenght of the oceans, of the soil and the volcanoes. We believe that every force of nature has a rhythm, a heartbeat. Come closer and listen to it in our design pieces.
BRABBU aims to fulfill the spaces with harmony, creating a state of mind.
I think the company aims not only match Christian, but where Christian wants to be, and that makes it a perfect fit. Three pieces from BRABBU were used in the film:
I’ll start with the last piece on the list, since that is the piece I was able to see in person and photograph myself. It also happens to be the first piece you see when Ana enters Christian’s apartment the first time.
The VELLUM Wall light:
The contemporary lighting piece VELLUM is the elegance of nature transformed by the man’s hand. It comes from the ancient manuscripts, where messages were written in VELLUM, a fine and translucent material. VELLUM wall lamp brings to the spaces the warm light of written stories passed through generations. Composed by hammered brass, its elegance exhales the power of resistance through times as the written stories never dies. Every story you create in your space will be written by the warm contemporary lighting words of VELLUM wall lamp.
Oh, the stories written in these lamp.
EANDA Dining Chair
One of the next pieces inside Christian’s apartment is the EANDA Dining Chair, located just past the elevator door:
EANDA is a matriarch in the Himba tribe and it is from them that children inherit the wealth. EANDA dining chair is the chairs matriarch. Its delicate structure gives the wealth that every room requires and the cotton softness enriches the human bodies.
As I recall from meeting with the different companies, the first company approached by Universal was Koket, I will feature their furniture on another date. They agreed to provide some of the furniture, but since their stuff tends to be a bit more feminine, they also referred Universal to some of their partner companies, BRABBU is one of them. So I do find it interesting that they used a more feminine chair here. However, it the chair fits perfectly in this area of the apartment, which is probably the brightest area of the apartment and with a more feminine feel than other areas. So although this foyer area does not have the 16 Madonna’s it still has a softer feel.
SEQUOIA is a nature force, an ancient spirit belonging to the largest and tallest trees in the world. The different veneer from the table top show the passage of the years, enriched by the texture of the brass bark. SEQUOIA proves the beauty of the action of time.
Each BRABBU design piece tells a story. BRABBU travels all over the world to find forgotten words, unusual textures and shapes in order to give life to our design pieces, telling stories where the characters are different cultures, the world and the essence of the time. All of these stories are reinterpreted through design, becoming part of the stories of each home and each space.
It’s interesting that each of these pieces are so different, yet the origins from nature of each helps bring the apartment together and transitions from section to section. And with each new home they go to, they will have new and even more interesting stories from Christian Grey’s apartment.
