In the past few weeks when I heard Charlie Hunnam’s name as a possible Christian Grey I thought he was more of an Elliot type. But since I wasn’t invited to the auditions for the Fifty Shades of Grey The Movie, I will continue to do what I have done for the past year – trust E L James and Team50. And really is there anything so wrong with Charlie Hunnam? Umm, don’t answer that yet. I will say that Mags thought he was a great match from the first rumor.
Charlie was born April 10, 1980, making him 33 and an acceptable age for me to lust after. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in England (not surprised to see a british actor signed for this film). From an interview with Stumped Magazine you get a feeling that he might identify with some of Christian’s background – he describes his childhood as kinda rough after his father left at 2 years old:
So I got moved when I was twelve from this place to a little country village with a very small town mentality, where again, there was a real currency being tough on the playground, so people started trying to prove their worth by fighting me on the playground to prove that they could have the Newcastle kid. So I ended up having a horrible childhood, a horrible time in school, having to really defend myself a lot.
He may just have more in common with Christian Grey then you would think. If that quote wasn’t enough, check out this interview from when he was 25. Charlie could have grown up to be a scrap metal worker and had a typical blue-collar life. Instead he left for the US at 18 years old and has picked who he would work with to make the most of his career.
Charlie started his career as Jason in 3 episodes of Byker Grove in 1989 and continued doing some smaller roles in TV until a steadier part in Queer as Folk. In 2003 he took on the character of Bosie in Cold Mountain, he did asshole well in that. But his biggest role has been as Jax in Sons of Anarchy, which I hear I MUST watch. Not doubt I will be catching up on that soon.
I know many of you are skeptical of Charlie, but the more I learn about him the more I’m falling in love with him. I can see the potential for him to do great things with the role of Christian Grey. I wish him and Dakota Johnson the best of luck!
