When I walked into work on Monday morning, everyone instantly knew my Fifty Shades of Grey weekend was really good, it wasn’t good, it was amazing!
The weekend started on Wednesday night when I talked Mags into going to stand in the Today Show Plaza to see E L James. Not only did we get to meet some of the girls we’ve known online for a while, we did get to meet Erika too. Actually, when Erika came out to the Plaza she gave Mags golden tickets to the Fifty Shades First event for the following day. I also got to tell Erika who I was (didn’t take too much explaining YAY!), and she signed my book and Fifty Shades of Grey ruler. After I went to breakfast with the girls I had met and that’s when I started feeling overwhelmed – the excitement of the morning finally set in. I guess no matter how long you prepare, you’re never ready for when the moment actually comes.
Thursday night Mags and I hosted a meet up and through a course of well timed tweets, Dana Brunetti showed up. Seriously, Dana Brunetti showed up. He was totally awesome! He didn’t run away screaming when he walked in the door and everyone screamed. He hung out for 2 hours, spoke to everyone, took tons of pictures, signed anything we threw at him. But overall, was just nice to our crazy group.
Of course on Friday we were all up super early for the screening of Fifty Shades of Grey and the taping of the Today Show. The black carpet was cool, lined with men serving us ladies drinks, free movie snacks and a room full of Fifty Shades fans. Then the Today Show started and Erika, Jamie, Dakota and Sam showed up, it was mayhem. And after the film was over and I was still shaking, Jamie, Sam, Dakota and Erika walked right by me. I’m shocked that I had enough composure to get a few pictures.
Friday night brought another opportunity to watch Fifty Shades of Grey, no “stars” there, but Dana Brunetti stopped by to say hi to us again and Meredith Vieira was a few rows ahead of us. She seemed to like the movie and apparently had not read the books.
Saturday found us fangirling even more and we might have ended up at the hotel where the press junket was and saw Dana Brunetti, again and saw Sam Taylor Johnson get into her SUV and drive off – she did wave and say hi to us.
Sunday though was the pinnacle, I met Jamie Dornan. Ok, there was a pretty big crowd there and the woman were a bit frenzied. It was hard to keep your cool. But, I will give a giant thanks to his bodyguards who were calm, cool and collected. Their calm tone kept me and many others calm. Others, not so much. I took my picture quick and moved on so others would have an opportunity to get theirs. Jamie was friendly, polite and patient with all of it. And if Jamie is reading this, I’m sorry if I jumped in front of you, took and picture and ran off with out saying a word. I’ll bring my manners next time, or at least I hope I do.
About an hour after that I started to crash, the high of the weekend fading as I started to face a regular week ahead of me. Don’t worry, by the next morning when I walked into work I was back on my high.
Over the course of the weekend, during the calmer moments I would occasionally get this overwhelming feeling of happy contentedness, that all the work I had done had paid off into an extra special moment. It was a feeling similar to those I would get during some of my great travel moments, those special times where you know you’re in the right place and time doing what you were meant to do and that you’ll never be the same person after.
Many people thought I was lucky this weekend, but like Christian Grey, I don’t subscribe to luck. I’ve worked hard over the past almost 3 years and put myself in places where good things could happen, that work resulted in a great weekend that I’ll never forget.
Of course I have to mention the girls that I spent the weekend with, without them the weekend wouldn’t have been so special. Some I had met before, some I had spoken on the phone with before, there’s something special about finally meeting friends in person after you’ve been talking to them over the internet and by phone for so long. They know who they are and that I love them and can’t wait to meet them again soon.
