The other day I posted a review of the film without spoilers, now it’s time to dig in for those of you who have seen the film. If you have not, and don’t want spoilers, DO NOT read anymore of this post.
Sorry if this is rambly, I just wrote the things that I thought of as I thought of them.
I kinda missed the intro to the movie because of the crowd… I’m still bitter, but it looked like it was great.
I loved the use of The Scientist at the start, it fit the mood of the beginning of the film perfectly and set the tone for an amazing soundtrack. The music blended really well with the film. The only songs I noticed were the ones I knew, and Sia, who has such a distinct tone, which I was looking for. I can’t wait to listen to the soundtrack knowing the scenes they went with.
The screenplay was perfect, Niall Leonard did a fantastic job of fixing some things from the first movie so the audience didn’t wonder how things happened the way they did, but also did waste much time on them. The day after the film I went to a meet up with Niall, I’ll integrate some of his comments into this post.
Yup, no Ethan. Apparently we aren’t the only ones who wanted him, or so Niall mentioned, and he wasn’t referring to himself. While Ethan made for an interesting side story, he wasn’t necessary for the plot of the story. Sorry Ethan. I liked how they got Ana into her apt without him though. Speaking of that scene, HOLY SHIT, I jumped in my seat, scared the shit out of me.
Going on the theme of cut characters, Flynn… Sad to see him go. As Niall said at the meet up. Nothing changes when Ana see’s him. So in that sense, no he’s not important to moving the story. But he was cast, and the part was filmed, but he ended up on the cutting room floor. Sorry Dr. Flynn, and as much as I hated to see him go, it didn’t really change the movie, so I guess Niall was right.
The sex scenes, OMG, I can’t believe they did all of that! Don’t tell Mags I said this, but I was wrong (about what they would put in it). I thought maybe they would get away with sucking the silver balls, let alone all of that! And amazingly tastefully done. Ana’s face when she laughed, priceless! I’m sorry the pool scene didn’t make it, it was cut to save the R-rating, but should appear on the DVD. I bet that was a good one! It was that or the elevator, and the elevator is probably my favorite of the series, so I’m happy with the way that went. I did enjoy that in general Christian couldn’t be bothered with taking all his clothes off for sex, showed his need for Ana. That and he was very “generous,” maybe that will set an example for other men, he he.
Jack… He started out so sweet, but holy shit! He got such a potty mouth when he got mad at Ana, I was actually shocked. But it was done so well, and I really needed him to be that over the top, or I would still kinda like him a little bit.
Right before the movie I met Kim Basinger in the theater. She was so sweet and nice. Absolutely gorgeous too! I told her I wasn’t sure if I could hate her, she said I would. She was soooo right! The bathroom scene was great but that hanky at the end… What a fucking bitch!
Christian was a cold dominant in the first movie, and while we see a few glimpses of that in this film, I really liked how warm and funny he was. I felt like Ana had changed him. He finally has emotion and he does it well. I loved how Grace hugs him when he comes back from the helicopter crash, it was so touching. Actually, Grace and Ana were awesome in that whole sequence. I wanted to throw up with worry, and I knew how it ended…
Leila… I like how they integrated her, it was a subtle touch with showing Ana heartbroken, it didn’t feel forced to me. I think it was good for people who didn’t know the books too.
I loved the lipstick scene, Christian showed so much emotion on his face, I felt the pain! And then the washing of it off, they all happened so quick, but I think they had the right balance for the movie. One scene I thought was too short, but was still so well done was Christian the Submissive. I didn’t even realize they moved the proposal until he proposed. But the lead up to that scene nearly had me in tears. I was biting my nails the whole time to see what would happen.
I totally missed the Working Girl line, it’s been years, as in decades, since I saw that. Enough people picked up on it so I knew there was something going on there. Mags explained to me later. That was Niall’s idea and Dakota didn’t know about it until the day they filmed. But she did tell get tell Melanie about it. I have no doubt Melanie will watch at least that part of the film. But I understand why she wouldn’t watch some other parts of the film.
The ball was sooooo pretty, all the bright colors. I’m sorry we didn’t get the bidding war over Ana, but I had a feeling that would be cut because it would take too long to set it up with all the characters involved. Next time you watch look for Niall Leonard in the scene. Also, Jack and Mrs. Robinson float in the background.
That’s all I can think of. If you want to discuss, feel free to use the comments section of this post.
