With all the talk about who will be in the movie, who will direct the movie and who will write the script of the movie, everyone is wondering if the Fifty Shades of Grey movie will be any good. Being an optimist and a practical person, I’m going to say that yes, the movie will in fact be good. Of course, they could botch it like they did with the first and second Twilight films, but I don’t think they will. Sorry if you liked them, but I thought they were pretty bad adaptations of the books. Anyway, here is why I think they will be, at the least, good movies.
I don’t know the details of E L James contract, but I remember reading somewhere that she has veto power over pretty much everything – meaning she will be very involved in the hiring of the director, screen writer and actors, she’s not going to let them make any bad choices that are contradictory to the story.
If the selection of the producers is any sign, this will be a medium to high profile cast and crew – not necessarily the biggest names with the biggest egos, but people who have experience making good movies. I don’t think we’re getting any unknown actors, I think they want actors who will be a draw themselves.
The screen writer will have an opportunity to clean up the writing. I know someone had said they needed to tear it apart. No, the books are not an example of great writing, but they are an example of a well woven story! Clean up the writing and you have the best of both worlds. A lot of the complaints about the book center around Ana’s inner dialog, the actress playing Ana will be acting it, not saying it.
More Christian! Need I say more? While the books gave us Ana’s perspective, we could get to see some of Christian’s side too, think of the additions made to the Hunger Games movie. Maybe we’ll get to see Dr. Flynn or Mrs. Robinson who don’t actually appear in the first book. Maybe we’ll see Christian and Mrs. Robinson meet before he goes to Georgia…
Sex, I’m not sure if this will make you, dear reader, happy or not, but I think they’ll be less sex. But really, do you want to be turned on at a crowded movie theatre??? I can’t imagine them cutting out the Red Room of Pain; but, how do you show either sex scene from the Red Room of Pain, but how do you not? And how do you make it tasteful? I’m thinking with scenes like from Magic Mike with a certain device being used before a performance… Sorry if you didn’t see the movie, but umm… Just go see the movie! Ok, that might not have been “tasteful” but it got the point across.
Yes, back to the sex, we’ll see some of that cut out, and a lot of it implied, some funny angles, etc. I think this is the area that is most risky, sex is a big part of the story in Fifty Shades of Grey and there is a lot of it. And it’s not all “R” material so this is where they could screw up the movie. But I have faith that they’ll find the right balance. And with less sex they’ll have more time to put in scenes of Christian that weren’t in the book!
But the best part of the movie, could be the DVD. Think of the deleted scenes and the possibility of an unrated version…
So yea, I think the movie will be good, if not great. It’s going to be different from the books, the guy you wanted as Christian might not be cast. And there will be some alterations, some we’ll like, some we won’t. But overall I have high hopes!
See you at the midnight showing!
