A couple weeks ago I got contacted by a friend about some new dating sites in the UK specializing in kink and thought it was time for me to pass on the information. Being the US, I haven’t been able to try any of them, but if you have let us know how the experience was.
Kinky Dating Sites Boom as Fifty Shades Fans Seek Bondage Partners Online
Online dating sites have experienced a significant rise in subscription numbers since 2012, industry professionals report. With thousands of singles now seeking not just GSOH, but a bit of BDSM too, experts have credited erotic bestseller and soon-to-be Hollywood film Fifty Shades of Grey as the trigger for an increase in online dating.
Data released by Bright Day, a UK-based online dating provider running over 350 matchmaking sites, suggests that not only have general dating sites increased in revenue since the book’s release, but in particular spikes have been seen across more niche categories such as BDSM-lovers and those seeking wealthy men.
Having analysed 10,000 of the sites’ dating profiles, Bright Day founder Andy Hammonds says it’s no small increase either.
“A few years ago, our more ‘adult’ dating sites were doing OK, but were only visited by a handful of people who had enjoyed an alternative lifestyle in the bedroom for some time.
“Since Fifty Shades of Grey, however, we’ve seen an 11% increase in BDSM-focussed dating sites to meet the demand from members who are exploring their kinky sides for the very first time. They’re searching for a partner willing to share in that.”
Bright Day also reported that sites in their portfolio targeting the wealthy men or ‘sugar daddy’ niche have also seen an 8% rise since 2012.
Along with the sale of adult products, the online dating market is just one of the industries reaping the rewards of E L James’ trilogy, of which over 100 million copies have now been sold in 52 languages.
“Fifty Shades of Grey has been a game-changer for the online dating industry” Hammonds says. “It’s made certain lifestyles far more mainstream. If people are looking for partners online and can choose the height and location of their ideal match, why not be specific about tastes in the bedroom?”
Internet dating is now an increasingly popular way for couples to meet, with a third of US marriages reportedly blossoming between couples who met on the web. The industry itself is valued at over £2bn.
The upcoming film adaptation of the steamy BDSM love story is due to rock box offices worldwide on Valentine’s day weekend – which Hammonds hopes will provide an even bigger boost to niche sites, which now include www.MillionaireMen.co.uk, www.BDSMsexsearch.com and www.TheSugarDaddyClub.com.
