Yesterday morning (It was so early it really was night) Crissy and I braved the wintery New York City cold and waited on line to get standby tickets to Saturday Night Live. Dakota Johnson was hosting her first SNL, and the musical guest was Alabama Shakes.
By the time we got to the line (around 2:30am) there were about 25 people in front of us, lying on the ground in sleeping bags or sitting in chairs covered up.
Crissy and I took our spots next to each other piled under blankets and a sleeping bag, sitting in chairs borrowed from my parents garage. I definitely felt like the little boy in that 80s Christmas Classic A Christmas Story, cause I couldn’t put my arms down to save my life!
Having done a little research before heading out, we knew that we were more likely to get in to the rehearsal show, which does a couple of extra skits for the audiences pleasure, than getting in to the live show. Five hours later, as the person handing out tickets came up to us, we decided to stick with our plan of asking for rehearsal tickets, since we were numbers 9 and 10 respectively on that list.
We were not disappointed, after a couple of drinks Crissy and I lined up at NBC’s GE building later that evening at 6:30pm. I entertained those around us, with conversation and photo bombing. I even made the new NBC page take a pic with us!
After going through security, exchanging our tickets for arm bands, we made our way though the hallowed halls of SNL history, filled with pictures of earlier times.
Entering the studio, its definitely alot smaller than you would think, they had a lot of skit walls, piled around the studio. After taking a couple of selfies, a lovely employee came up and told me I had to erase them.
The show itself started on an high note and just kept getting funnier. Dakota’s parents, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson were there, even taking a part of her opening monologue (covering their eyes just in case she was naked). Dakota let us in on a little secret between her parents, she might or might not have been “made” the evening that Melanie Griffith was hosting SNL and Don Johnson proposed to her for a second time (I honestly don’t know if she was joking about that or not). The red room of pain made an appearance, as did an interview during the FSOG premiere campaign. A smack could be heard through the studio at one point, with Dakota’s character yelling “harder”…
What was funny to Crissy and I (besides Dakota in the show), was this woman who kept dragging Dakota off after every skit. We figure she must be like an animal wrangler, except for actors. Dakota kept having to run (sometimes in heels) to keep up.
All and all it was a greyt time, and definitely worth braving the cold (we turned into popsicles, but not Christian Grey flavored ones.! I hope she hosts again, I will make sure I’m there!
