One thing I’m loving about the casting of Fifty Shades of Grey is that it is all over the place. From rookie actors and actresses with few films under their belts to Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden as Grace.
Marcia is 54 years old and was born August 14, 1959 in California. Her Dad was an officer in the Navy, do they use the term Navy brat? She attended University of Texas for her bachelors and received her MA from NYU. She is divorced with 3 children and currently living in California. He niece, nephew and sister-in-law passed away in a fire in Queens back in 2003.
Much of her early work was on TV, including Simon and Simon and Kojak. Her career has grown substantially since then and while I sometimes have to look pretty hard to find a role I remember a certain actor or actress in, that is not the case with Marcia. She’s done tons of great work including: Spitfire Grill, First Wives Club, Desperate Measure, Meet Joe Black, Mystic River, Mona Lisa Smile, and Whip It to name a few.
In 1993 she was nominated for a Tony award as Best Actress (Featured Role – Play) for Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and in 2009 awarded a Tony for her work in God of Carnage. She was awarded with an Academy Award for her Supporting Role in Pollock and nominated again for her work in Mystic River.
Marcia Gay Harden is an experienced and accomplished actress that fits the character of Grace perfectly. As much as I’m enjoying some out of the box casting choices for Fifty Shades of Grey, I’m happy to see that they stayed more traditional for the role of Grace. I think she’s too loved by the readers to take a risk with.
Reading about Marcia I found we had a lot of little “6 Degrees of Separation.” So if an academy award wasn’t enough to draw me to her, those little things make me love her indelibly.
Congratulations and good luck to Marcia Gay Harden!
