I met Aviva on Twitter and while we seemed to have some friends in common for a while, we really connected when I helped her with the posting of the Book of Hours that she created for Erika. She’s an amazing artist and super smart on a variety of topics.
What is your name? Aviva
Where are you from? Berlin, Germany
How did you come to read Fifty Shades of Grey?
I’m not too sure anymore as it is some years ago now. I read Twilight and watched the movies as they came out and observed the fandom reading some fanfiction but not regularly. But I guess I wasn’t totally into it as I still kept my oath to never enter a fandom ever again and refrained from commenting. To cut a long story short, I’m pretty sure I also read chapters of Master of the Universe back then and I got the ebooks pretty soon after they initially were published. What I do remember is that I read all books three times in a row when I got them, not able to do anything else at that time.
Did you read an actual book or an ebook?
ebook – it’s just easier to get your hands on those in English when you live in a non-English speaking country. Meanwhile we have physical copies of the books, but they are in German for my mom and grandma. I’m a snob when it comes to that, I didn’t touch them.
Which is your favorite book in the series?
Fifty Shades Darker
What is your favorite scene in the series?
When Ana pours champagne over Elena. I wanted to do that and worse to her by that time that I wanted to high five Ana then.
How many times have you read the series?
I plead the 5th. Way too often for someone who has a nearly perfect memory, but repetitions sooth me.
Outside of Fifty Shades of Grey, what is your favorite book, series or author?
That’s hard. I love Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy, Amy Plum’s Revenants series, Sylvain Reynard, Elizabeth Wein, Sarah J. Maas etc. but also Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, the German and English classics etc. Stories are like traveling just with the mind. And just as I have no patience for tanning at a beach/ pool I admit to not having much patience with most romances though. I need more.
If you were to meet E L James today, what 2 questions would you ask her?
Let’s be real, I’d freeze. At least in any situation that only allows for two questions. And if I got to ask something it would be something along Baby’s “I carry the watermelons.” line (And I am totally aware that many will be way too young for this Dirty Dancing reference. I can deal with that.)
What was your favorite scene in Fifty Shades of Grey The Movie?
In general I loved how Sam Taylor Johnson composed images and scenes like paintings with lights and lines that come together to continue the storytelling. I can get lost in these details. But if I have to boil it down to one scene, it’s Christian and Ana in the Great Room before they go into the RRoP for the last time. Or maybe it is the interview scene. Or the contract negotiation. Or … I don’t know!
What scene are you most looking forward to in Fifty Shades Darker The Movie?
Maybe Christian, Ana and Leila in Ana’s apartment. Maybe Christian the submissive. Maybe Ana standing her ground with Jack or Elena. But honestly, I most look forward to another outburst of creativity of so many that ends up to be one piece of work. It’s always astonishing what people can achieve if they come together and give their best.
