Happy 46 Days to #FiftyShades
Betty has been very active in the Fifty Shades Fan Podcast chats and after she won one of our giveaways I wanted to get to know more about her.
What is your name? My name is Elizabeth but you can call me Betty.
Where are you from? I’m from New York City.
How did you come to read Fifty Shades of Grey?
I first found out about Fifty Shades of Grey through the nightly news. There was a special report on it and there were many questions being asked about the success of the trilogy. During the segment I found out that some people though the books were controversial and I became intrigued. I tried to read a sample through the Barnes & Noble’s website but I couldn’t get into the story so I decided to move on. But once again the media kept talking about Fifty Shades of Grey so I decided to give it another try.
Did you read an actual book or an ebook?
No, I listened to a reading of the book on youtube. There was a young lady reading the book through her channel and I thought I would give it a try. She brought Ana to life with the different voices she gave Ana, her inner goddess and her subconscious. Unfortunately she had to stop making the videos because she was contacted by lawyers threatening to take her to court. By then I was hooked on the story and was desperate to know what would happen to Ana and Christian. So I searched for other videos hoping someone else was reading the book. At the end I stumble upon the audiobooks on youtube and that is how I got to listen to all three books. Later I read the trilogy through ebooks and I plan on buying the actual books in the future.
Which is your favorite book in the series?
That is a hard question. Each book shows a different stage in Ana and Christian’s relationship. I like the first book because it’s their courtship. But I have to admit that Darker and Freed are my favorites. In Darker Christian opens up to Ana. We find out more about his past, his fears and his feelings towards Ana. Not to mention the suspense we go through thanks to Leyla, Elena and Jack. I love Freed because that is when their relationship becomes real. We see them adjust to married life and their struggles to maintain parts of themselves that brought them together in the first place. Plus I love that they are more in tune with each other.
What is your favorite scene in the series?
I’ve though a lot about this question and I struggled with it because there are many funny, romantic and emotional scenes that it’s hard to narrow it down. But since I have to choose I would say there are two scenes. The first one is from Fifty Shades Freed, when Christian tells Ana his bedtime story after Grace and Carrick help him fill in the blanks on his two month memory gap with the Colliers. When he finally tells her everything about his troubled adolescence, Elena, the start of their relationship and his fear of intimacy after getting emotionally hurt by his mother we are able to see him at his most vulnerable. Finding out Christian always felt alone and viewed himself as an unlovable savage is painful. His confession shows us just how badly his early childhood memories have affected his view on himself and the world. Christian knows his past is something Ana has been curious about and even though it’s painful for him, he puts everything out on the open and by doing so he is letting old wounds heal. Ana’s love is so strong and important to Christian that he is willing to tell her just how much she means to him.
When Christian tells Ana his life before she walked into his office was ordered, calm and controlled. I feel like we can all relate to that because at one point of our lives we all find ourselves trapped in a routine. We follow the motions without questioning it and then something unexpected and wonderful happens. Life has a meaning and the world is full of bright colors. There is so much love and hope in his words that I can’t help but feel proud of his personal growth. He finally understands that he can love and accepts being loved. And although he was still receptive of little Blip, I feel like he has come a long way from that scared little boy who refused to talk.
My second favorite scene would be when Christian visits Ana at Clayton’s Hardware Store. Every time I read Ana’s thoughts when she sees him makes me giggle. She is nervous, surprised and excited to see him there. This is the first time she feels little butterflies in her stomach and she can’t believe or understand what’s happening. Her inner voice tells her Christian is there to see her and she refuses to believe it. She is so star struck she feels platonic plates shift positions every time their eyes meet or their fingers touch. Her world becomes a romance novel and she starts describing his voice as “warm and husky like dark melted chocolate fudge caramel… or something” It’s an adorable scene where both of them are nervous and excited to see each other. And they both hope they can see each other again. It’s in this scene that we see them act their age, young and insecure. At this point of the story the possibilities are endless. And just like Ana, I find myself quivering with a “mass of ragging female hormones” after he confesses he is “glad Ms. Kavanagh couldn’t do the interview”.
How many times have you read the series?
I’m proud to say far too many times. Maybe 5 or 6 times and each time I do, I discover something new. The story is very compelling. Despite what the media says there is a love story. The characters respect each other and they help each other become better versions of themselves.
Outside of Fifty Shades of Grey, what is your favorite book, series or author?
My favorite book is “Eleven Minutes” by Paulo Coelho. I read that book 5 times back to back and I couldn’t put it down. Maria is the protagonist of the story. The book starts with her as an 11 year old girl in her small town in Brazil and her first love and heartbreak. Throughout the novel Maria comes to believe that love makes you suffer and she doesn’t believe she will ever fall in love. It’s a beautiful story that makes you look at love and people differently. I highly recommend it to everyone. I’ve read many books from Mr. Coelho and I find them very inspiring. I like reading fan fiction as well. It’s incredible how much talent is out there and all their original stories.
If you were to meet E L James today, what 2 questions would you ask her?
First I would like to thank her. She has empowered many women to find their inner voices and express themselves in ways they never thought possible. Thanks to her women are coming together and embracing their likes with pride. In addition to her lovely books she has introduced us to beautiful music and that is a gift I will cherish forever.
My first question would be, during the filming process did any of the actors ask her for more information regarding their characters? If so which characters and what did she add to their story? My second question is, is she planning on recording her thoughts on the film when the movie comes out on DVD?
Have you had any unique experiences because of your love of Fifty Shades of Grey?
I never imagined in my wildest dreams that the Fifty Shades of Grey community could be so loving and accepting. Each person I’ve interacted with is generous, supportive and passionate about the books, the author and the film. Their enthusiasm is contagious and it makes each chat or podcast more special. I’m still surprised when I see all the countries the trilogy has reached. But most importantly I’m amazed at all the love and joy one woman can bring with her work. Her words are special and even more are those who stop and listen. So to the entire Fifty Shades community I thank you all. You have made this an unforgettable experience. And once again the music has been another bonus. I’ve been introduced to so many artist and genres it’s beautiful. The music in this trilogy is food to my soul.
What scene are you most looking forward to in Fifty Shades of Grey The Movie?
I am looking forward to seeing Ana interview Christian. If it wasn’t for Kate and her flu we wouldn’t have Ana and Christian. I am curious to see how exactly Ana managed to trip and Christian going to her side to help her. And of course I want to see Christian and Ana at Clayton’s.
