For our newest interview around the Fifty Shades Community we thought we would go in another direction and interview an Ana hopeful. In the past almost year I’ve gotten to know Cristela on Twitter and Facebook and although I have no say in casting, she’s been impressive in her understanding of the character of Ana. I thought it would be fun to get some insight into the mind of someone who wanted to be in the movie.
What is your name?
My Name is Cristela Valencia Da Costa
How did you come to read Fifty Shades of Grey?
A friend of mine had asked me if I heard about the book and that it was very popular in America. I hadn’t heard about it until she mentioned it so I decided to do some research and found out a bit about the story. I was curious as to why the book was so popular so I ordered myself the trilogy and it started from there; I was hooked and could not put it down until I finished them all.
Did you read an actual book or an ebook?
I read the actual book although I have the ebook as well. Since I do a lot of writing and research on the computer, the last thing I want to do is sit in front of a screen again when trying to relax, plus I find it more relaxing having a book in my hand, lying down somewhere comfortable and quiet and just letting myself get absorbed in the world of the book. I find that there is something more satisfying about holding a book, the texture of the paper on your skin and the sound of the pages turning as you read, it makes the reading more pleasurable.
Which is your favourite book in the series?
This is difficult because I loved all three books but I think I probably enjoyed Darker a little bit more. Although there are lots of scenes in both Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Freed that I loved as well.
What is your favorite scene in the series?
There are way too many to list but if I had to choose a few of my favourite scenes I would have to say the ones where Christian’s vulnerability was shown. Like when Ana left him at the end of Fifty Shades, When he didn’t know where Ana was after the whole Leila incident in Darker, then later when he was scared she was going to leave and dropped down into his Submissive position, When he couldn’t find Ana in the morning after he got drunk in Freed. When Ana was in a coma in hospital and you heard Christian speaking…gosh I could go on and on. I think that I liked these scenes more because it was not only restricted to how Christian felt but it also made me feel and go through the emotions that Ana went through in those scenes. To me it worked on both characters vulnerability and love for each other and it just showed how their relationship was and this made it real. They had to work hard for it and overall it is a brilliant love story.
How many times have you read the series?
*hides face* I haven’t read it as much as I’d have liked to or as many times as everyone has I’m ashamed to say. I read them all twice, but I am definitely planning on reading them again once things calm down as it is a bit hectic at the moment and I know that if I pick up the book I will not be putting it down anytime soon. Although, I have to say the good thing with me is that I have this ability to remember things in great detail, it is like I have the books programmed in my brain and see it so clearly in my mind; it is like having it on tap, my own kind of ebook if you like in my head and at any time I can just replay the story. From time to time I do pick up the book and flip to my favourite parts and re-read them. But I am definitely going to re-read all three books again soon.
Outside of Fifty Shades of Grey, what is your favourite book or series?
I was very much into the Twilight Series and read all four books. But I have to admit I haven’t read many other books after that, the first one would have been Fifty Shades. The weird thing is I love reading and used to read loads of books but now it is finding the time to sit down and actually relax with a good book. I have a list of about 15 books that I want to read just haven’t had the chance. Once I manage to get everything I have going on at the moment done and finalized I will definitely just take time to sit down, relax and read.
Are you married, dating, or single?
I am single at the moment; unfortunately I am still yet to find my Christian Grey.
Who would you like to see play Christian in the movie?
This is difficult to say because I think that there are many talented actors out there that would bring different elements, ideas and their own personal touch to playing Christian Grey. I am a huge fan of Ian Somerhalder and I can totally see him as Christian. Funny thing I’ve dreamt 3 times that he was Christian & I was Anastasia, and I have never dreamt about him before until only recently. I also think that Matt Bomer would make an awesome Christian. However, that said I am sure whoever gets to play Christian will do a fantastic job.
If you were to meet E L James today, what 2 questions would you ask her?
Gosh I am really bad at thinking of questions to ask. Let’s see…I guess the first question would be to tell her I am interested in playing Ana in the movie and whether she would consider giving me a chance to audition and/or play her.
For the second question I might ask her who her ideal actor and actress would have been to play Christian and Ana. I know she wrote the book as a fan-fiction from the Twilight books but I am sure she envisioned who would play those roles like how we all think should play those characters.
How long have you been acting?
I have been acting for the past four years. Mainly doing a lot of Theatre work but I always wanted to do film, so that is what I am aiming for.
What about Ana has made you want to play her instead of another character?
Right from the beginning of the book I connected with her character on a personal and emotional level. There is so much of myself that I see in Ana. When I was reading the book, it felt as though E.L. James was writing about me, it was so weird but I could understand and feel everything that Ana went through. I know a lot of people would say because they can relate certain things within their own lives but I’ve never felt this kind of connection to a character before. I mean I got a best friend that I would do absolutely anything for and her for me. A guy friend that wants more but is more like a brother to me and that is just the tip of the iceberg. I believe I will be a great Ana not only because I connect with her but also because I’m passionate about the character and the story as a whole. I am literally willing to do whatever it is necessary to bring the character to life.
What do you think is the most important characteristic of Ana for the actress who plays her to understand?
Ana has a lot of important characteristics so there is a broad range that the actress playing her can to choose from. For me personally I think Ana’s most valuable characteristic is her kindness, compassion & unconditional love. I say this because that is what helped her get through to Christian and it is one of the things that Christian fell in love with because he never had that or believed he deserved and it is what he needed. Ana constantly shows this side of her through the whole book and that is why for me it is something that whoever portrays her should get to understand and be able to show.
