How did you come to read Fifty Shades of Grey?
I work in a library and hadn’t read a book in years. Yes, that’s right, I work in a library & didn’t read. Strange but true. I just never took the time, always busy doing other things to bother about reading. In the beginning of 2012 we started receiving requests from customers about this book called Fifty Shades of something or other, which wasn’t unusual, our customers regularly suggest books for us to buy. But we were getting inundated and I thought to myself, if I hear about Fifty Shades one more time I’m going to scream. And who is this EL James guy anyway, what does he know about writing books for women?
A customer donated her copies of the trilogy and I just put it in a pile for me to assess whether or not we accepted them. Then a few weeks later, I’m at home watching TV and I get a text from my sister in-law. Now I just told you I hadn’t read a book in years, my sister in-law is probably worse than me, she can’t stand reading and think it’s boring, she can’t understand how I could even work with books. So back to her text, I couldn’t believe what I read. I remember calling out to my husband and telling him “your sister is nuts, she just told me she read a book” and he goes “a book? With words?” we started laughing at the concept. Her text basically said that she just read a book called Fifty Shades of Grey and she couldn’t put it down, it’s the best book she ever read and she is totally in love with Christian Grey. I just replied saying “oh yeah, we have that book at the library, I’ll read it one day.”
To be honest, I had no intention of reading it, but then I started thinking if she loved it so much and she doesn’t read and every second customer is reading it then fine, I’ll succumb and read it too. I did assess the donated copies of the books and how unfortunate that they weren’t suitable to be included in the library’s collection. So I gave them a new home on my bookshelf.
They stayed on my bookshelf for a few more weeks. I kept looking at them and eventually I took the plunge and started reading. It started off OK, a nice little read, then chapter by chapter I just got hooked. It was like I was possessed. I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep, I just had to know what would happen next. I wanted to stay awake as long as I could. I couldn’t concentrate at work, every spare second at work I would read. I would read a page here or there at my desk but during my lunch break I thought I would continue, but silly me read in the staff kitchen and kept getting interrupted. Can’t they see I’m reading!!! Honestly. So then during my lunch break I would race to my car, eat my lunch & read. I would go home, do the bare minimum & read. I would wake up at 3am and read. I was a wreck and I loved it. Reading about Ana & Christian’s relationship totally consumed my life and still does in a way. My only regret was not reading it sooner.
Did you read an actual book or an ebook?
An actual book
Which is your favorite book in the series?
Fifty Shades Freed
What is your favorite scene in the series?
When Ana is being blackmailed by Jack in Freed and she has to go to great lengths and risks to ensure Mia is safe. I love it when she manages to get away from Sawyer (poor Sawyer), goes to the bank, has to talk to Christian after the bank manager calls him and then before she becomes unconscious hearing Christian call out to her. Then when Ana is in hospital recovering and Christian is by her side. I can feel his love and worry for her and the baby.
I also love the scene when everyone is at Aspen and the girls are dancing at the club and blonde giant comes along and feels up Ana, who then slaps him before Christian appears and decks him. This scene comes a very very close second!
How many times have you read the series?
I’ve read the actual book once but because I did nothing whilst I read, I ended up getting the audio books, which have been a lifesaver. I can listen to it and still do my housework, it’s a win-win situation. I’ve listened to the audio over 10 times probably, at a guess anyway.
Outside of Fifty Shades of Grey, what is your favorite book, series or author?
This is so difficult, because I now love reading and have enjoyed so many books. I love SC Stephens, Abbi Glines, Sylvia Day, Sylvain Reynard, Kerry Heavens, Lesley Jones, Rachel Brookes, Christina Lauren and Jamie Maguire.
If you were to meet E L James today, what 2 questions would you ask her?
1) How many tweets, emails, etc does she receive on average from fans every day? Is it hundreds, thousands?
2) What has her experience been filming FSOG?
Have you had any unique experiences because of your love of Fifty Shades of Grey?
I wouldn’t say unique because I know this has happened to others, but I’ve met the most wonderful people on Twitter through our mutual love of FSOG. I have made some beautiful friendships and have been lucky enough to meet some of my friends in person.
What scene are you most looking forward to in Fifty Shades of Grey The Movie?
I can’t wait to see Ana’s face when Christian arrives in Georgia and then what they get up to whilst he’s there – gliding and eating at IHOP. I love pancakes!
