After almost a year and a half as head of production at Sony, De Luca has announced his exit and return to producing. He is expected to reach a deal with Universal.
Releasing a statement Thursday evening, De Luca said “I literally wish I could be in two places at once, but the opportunity to resume my producing career right now, including the possibility of continuing on the Fifty Shades trilogy, makes this the right choice for me at this unique moment in time. I look forward to continuing to work with Columbia on my existing productions there.”
Having produced a number of great movies like Captain Phillips, Moneyball, and of course, Fifty Shades of Grey before becoming President of production for Sony, DeLuca has split his career and time in the entertainment industry as Pwresident of production for a number of Hollywood powerhouse Studios and producer.
While there is normally more stability and security working as an exec for the studios than as a producer, De Luca stands to make a very good amount of money if his deal with Universal goes through, and he does wind up working on the rest of the Fifty’s trilogy.
Having enjoyed a number of movies that he has produced (including FSOG), I look forward to seeing more of his work and wish him luck. Timing is everything, and I think his is perfect!
