What we know is that Sam Taylor-Johnson is that she was married to Jay Jopling and had 2 girls before getting divorced after 11 years of marriage. She met her current husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, when they were filming Nowhere Boy. They are now married and have two children. Aaron is a bit younger then Sam, about half her age. Go Sam! I think I now know what I’m doing wrong in my own search for a man!
No, I don’t think Aaron is going to play Christian Grey. Here’s the response from WME Reps: “He is not going to pursue the role. In fact, he is going to be a supportive husband and father by staying home this fall to take care of the couple’s two kids while she shoots ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.'”
I did get a question from a fan asking if I thought she would have an issue with a gay actor (ie Matt Bomer), all indications lead me to believe that would not be a factor. Seriously, if the husband is staying at home with the kids, then she lives outside the box.
While on the surface Sam’s list of directing gig’s might be short; however, that’s not all that surprising for a female director. She does have a long history in film, photography and the arts. In 2011 she was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire), she’s not a rookie without experience. Nowhere Boy was nominated for two BAFTA Awards. She’s also working on another book adaptation with Michael De Luca.
According to this Indiewire article she was one of very few who actually got to meet with Erika and they hit it off pretty quickly. Here’s a juicier tidbit:
Taylor-Johnson also directed the short “Love You More,” which is about two teens exploring their sexuality, and was nominated for the Palme D’Or in 2008. Her photography has often dealt with adult sexuality. De Luca was in her corner, because she had been developing a film for him at Columbia Pictures, based on the novel by Robert Goorlick, “A Reliable Wife,” which she will now put aside.
Here’s what producer, Michael De Luca, has said about Sam:
Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life. E L James’ characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed and Sam is a natural fit.
What does Sam say? She promises: “For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin too.”
When I was checking out her website on Wendesday it featured one of her films as the background, it had a real raw feel to it. While I would expect a more polished product from Focus Features and producers Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca, I could definitly see her use of this raw technique in scenes like the Red Room of Pain or in flashbacks of Christian’s childhood.
Word is that filming will start this fall, with no location announced. The timing sounds right, given the time needed for casting and the desire to get the film out for summer 2014.
