In Chapter XVIII we learn all about Angel and he finally realizes he knows Tess and he likes her. I’m happy even though I know there is too much book left for a happy ending.
In Chapter XIX I realize I will be getting a refresher on roman numerals, ughh.
We’re back to learning about milking cows. The Dairyman wants the milkmaids and men to switch between the cows they milk. The cows and the milkmaids and men prefer to stick with who they know. Tess’ cows are: Dumpling, Fancy, Lofty, Mist, Old Pretty, Young Pretty, Tidy and Loud. While Tess does try to switch the cows she milks it seems that one certain dairyman pupil seems to manipulate which cows she is likely to come into contact with.
When Tess mentions this to Angel he says that he knows she will always be there to milk her cows. She comments that she hopes so and then is mad at herself for perhaps giving Angel the wrong idea.
Then one night in June Tess hears Angel playing music outside (as opposed to his usual location in his loft), she ends up in a trance walking through untended fields to him. When she meets him they end up discussing their fears. Tess admits to being afraid of life, which surprises him, but then he does seem a bit dense at times.
But he certainly does pick up on her melancholy about life and realizes there is something more there, but he can’t imagine what. Tess also picks up on Angel having his own issues, the ones that pushed him from a life in the clergy and into the life of a farmer.
As the days go on, they both seem to be checking each other out. Tess keeps seeing Angel as out of her league, being so smart and above her, it just adds to her depression. Once he notices this change in her he offers to teach her. Tess rejects the offer, and then later feels bad for doing that.
In order to improve his view of her she considers telling him that she is a descendant of the d’Urbervilles. She asks the diaryman about Angel’s opinion of the old families and finds out that he respects no-named hard workers over a fancy name. Saved, she now thinks that part of his attraction to her might be that she is just a milkmaid.
