In chapter XLVII Alec visits Tess while she’s being overworked at the farm. He tries manipulating her by saying he has left his preaching because of her. Then goes after Angel’s abandonment of her and finally tells her that she will be his.
It’s later in the day and Alec is watching Tess work from a distance. Alec even goes so far as to ask farmer Groby if he can see her; farmer Groby tells Tess she is free to go see him, but she decides to continue working.
By the time Tess quits working she’s so tired I thought she was going to pass out. Marian notices how tired she is, which isn’t hard to do since she was shaking from exhaustion.
Tess is so exhausted that when Alec insists on walking her home, she quickly agrees and even seems to be apologetic to Alec. Yup, she’s definitely delirious.
Alec takes a different tact with her this time. Since he can’t marry her he would like to help her and her family. Oh, yes, Alec says he’s been to visit the family. She tells him that if he wants to help the family they will need it. But she doesn’t want to know anything about it; she doesn’t want to take anything from him.
After that they part, Tess prepares for bed and sits down to write a long letter to Angel.
It’s a LONG letter telling Angel that he either needs to come and get her or she needs to go to him or something bad will happen.
In the middle of all that she references his punishment to her of being left while he sets up a farm, but cant he please put her out of her misery already. She also talks about her undying love for him, how she is desolate without him.
Tess also writes about her religion and how she is the same girl he met on the farm. I laugh when she writes about still being pretty and hiding it because it only means something if he can appreciate it.
I am, as I say, worried, pressed to do what I will not do. It cannot be that I shall yield one inch, yet I am in terror as to what an accident might lead to, and I so defenseless on account of my first error. I cannot say more about this-it makes me too miserable. But if I break down by falling into some fearful snare, my last state will be worse than my first.
Yes, in her exhausted state Tess is starting to lose her resolve against Alec, it’s time for Angel to come home and either fight for his girl or let her go.
