Last week Examiner.com had an article about potential directors: David Fincher, Gus Van Sant, James Franco, Catherine Hardwicke, and Steven Soderbergh. A few months ago I wrote a post about a few directors (a few from this list). Here is a run down on what I think of this latest group to be mentioned.
Catherine Hardwiche – Best known for Directing Twilight. I’m sorry, but as much as I love Twilight, the movie sucked on several levels. But, I think her name comes up just because she directed Twilight and Fifty Shades is Twilight Fanfic.
Steven Soderbergh – I have a sneaking suspicious he’s been added to these lists because he directed Magic Mike, which I do NOT think is the type of movie Team50 wants to make. But, he has actually made some interesting movies across different genres: Contageon, Oceans 11, 12, 13, and Erin Brockovich. I’m not sure I would list him as a first choice, but then again, I don’t get to hear his pitch.
Gus Van Sant He’s a Director, Producer and Writer. His Directing resume includes My own Private Idaho, Pyscho, Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester, and Milk. To name a few of his bigger films. They all, in their own ways, great films and some tackling difficult topics. It all makes him an interesting choice.
James Franco is an actor, writer, producer, director. Ok, he knows all aspects of film. As for directing, he’s mostly done shorts, none of which I’ve heard of. But he did direct Fools Gold, which is a cute little romantic comedy. But he’s got a lot of projects on his plate at the moment, which could make him difficult to schedule with.
David Fincher is an interesting choice, with a lot of promise. He’s already done a couple projects with Dana Brunetti (and Michael DeLuca) – House of Cards and The Social Network. But he’s also done some edgier films – Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Se7en, Panic Room and several music videos. It’s an interesting resume with some good movies. If Team50 is looking for someone with more experience, he would be a good choice.
