For over a year since reading Fifty Shades of Grey and starting this site I’ve been waiting for casting to be done. I’ve read all the crazy news, some with some merit, others that were completely ridiculous. But through all that I always knew that casting was way off in the future.
Now that a director and a release date is chosen, casting is coming soon. Word is that filming will be this fall, which does give a few months for casting to be completed. But I think we can all agree this will be an interesting summer in the Fifty Shades of Grey world.
But that makes me nervous.
Why? Well many of you are very passionate about casting. You read the books and visualized a certain actor as Christian Grey and now he’s the only person you can picture in that role. Or, you’re horrified by certain possibilities. I get it, but it scares me. No matter who is chosen to play Christian and Ana a lot of you will be disappointed, maybe even outraged.
It’s nothing new, it happens with a lot of the big movies. A lot of fans were unhappy with the choice of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss in The Hunger Games. Today I don’t know anyone who thinks she was a bad choice. Sam Claflin got a lot of criticism when he was cast as Finnick, fans were downright rude about it when it was announced.
That’s why I’m nervous about casting. If fans were caught up in who THEIR Christian Grey is and that person isn’t chosen. I’m afraid of the backlash.
It’s one of the reasons I haven’t let myself get too attached to any actor or actress for the the parts of Christian and Ana, I don’t want to be disappointed. There are actors and actresses who I think would be better, but since I wont get to see auditions I don’t really know who can and can’t do the job. I’m putting my faith in Team50 to make the right choices.
In reality can’t wait to hear who will take on the roles, I’m just afraid of the people who will be disappointed. When casting is announced, I’ll probably write a post and then go hide from social media. In the meantime, I encourage all of you to let the choice soak in before commenting on it, especially if it’s not your choice.
On the upside, we’ll be done with all the crazy casting speculation.
